THREE Dinichi Updates!

DSC_0085

Remember the Dinichi family? They were with us during the last fundraiser and I know they were loved dearly by the whole IBKC community.  No surprise -- they were absolutely adorable AND there were a couple of polydactyls in the pack.  We love our polys 'round here!

I'm so excited to share updates on three of our four Dinichis today.

First up, handsome Russle "Spud" Dinichi.

Here he is as a young lad.

Here he is now! MY GOODNESS! Look at those giant lobster claws!!

Here's an update from his mama, Lisa!

I have always been intrigued by ginger kitties and it was always my hope to be owned by one, but there was never one available when our family was thinking of adopting a kitten. So, a little over a year ago, a beautiful ginger polydactyl boy popped up on the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee Blog. My family notified me of this and I was strongly encouraged by my hubby and daughter to throw my hat in the ring. I was reluctant, given that we already had a 70-pound dufus dog (Stanley, about 10 years old) and a pair of brother cats (Jack and Louie, about 9 years old) that ruled the roost. I was reluctant to upset the delicate household balance. However, I contacted the IBKC, gave our story, and threw my name into the hat to be potentially owned by this little ginger boy.

I recall with great excitement the email from IBKC saying that we were the chosen family. Russell was tiny (in the neighborhood of 2 pounds), absolutely handsome and charming as could be. The first few days that Russell was home were spent in our “mancave” with hubby who was recovering from surgery. They quickly bonded over the SyFy channel and their mutual love of cuddling on the couch for hours on end. The first meeting between Stanley and Russell resulted in Russell becoming a huge “bottle brush” (it is amazing how big tiny kittens can make themselves!) The first meeting with Jack and Louie didn’t go much better. I truly wondered what we had gotten into. However, Russell grew quickly in confidence and size, and now outweighs one of our older cats by 5 pounds. He is 13 pounds now! Besides his favorite, well-loved sparkle ball, one of our older cats is his best friend. They wrestle and chase each other all over the house. When he’s not playing with Louie, Russell can be found chasing his ball all over the kitchen and living room, using his big mitts to bat the ball away (his soccer skills are just as impressive as you would expect they would be), just so he can pounce on it.

When he’s not playing by himself or with the older cats, he can be found suckling on any soft blanket, before finally taking a long, well-deserved nap.

Russell’s relationship with Stanley has improved immensely as Russell has matured. While Stanley is still too big for Russell to play with, he will gladly accept any licks that Stanley will give him. Stanley loves his kitten too, and has taught Russell how to beg for food. I have never met a cat so food-motivated, but he will do just about anything for a treat.

Thank you, Laurie, for our little ginger baby. We love him!

Next up, we have the adorable Tegan Grace Dinichi. Above is a picture from her adoption day. Below, a nice bunch of pics and an update from her mama, Tanya.

I wanted to share an update on how Zoya (formerly Tegan) is doing. It's hard to believe it's been nearly a year since she has joined our family. She is a little nut and she is the best! She was a very goofy and clumsy kitten and that has not changed - sometimes when she is playing with a toy and trying to kick it with her back legs, she'll kick herself in the head instead. She spends a lot of time doing "the seal" - just laying on her back, looking around. She purrs constantly - just making eye contact with her is enough to get her motor going. She still has the adorable high-pitched squeaky purr she had as a baby.

Her favorite things are playing with us and the older kitties, spending time in the catio, chattering at birds and squirrels, hunting flies (she's very good), and treat time. She doesn't have the best biting manners - in fact her early nickname was Shark Face - but it's getting much better with time and training. She is starting to like snuggling a bit more, with us and the two older kitties. She is very social, and follows us from room to room. Her thumbs have developed well! She still has goofy lobster paws, but we haven't had any issues with the claws, which we keep trimmed. Thank you so much for raising this goofball, we can't imagine life without her!

And last up, we have Cassie Nicole, who now goes by the name "Lucy."  Here she is as a tiny thing:

Here she is today!

And an update from her mom, Cathy:

Here is the update on Lucy... She is a spunky little (not so little) kitty who has totally adjusted to being a girl. ha ha. Seriously though, she and Holly have fallen into a mutual tolerance and daily "kitties gone wild" chase. Every so often I even find them all curled up together and I consider that GREAT progress. Lucy loves to hang out on the deck and bird watch. She is also quite the foodie and has gotten a bit chunky so we are working on that. She still purrs so loud it sounds like a lawn mower and loves a good tummy rub. I just love having her in my life and I want to thank you for fostering her and socializing her so well.

I attached a few photos. The one of kitties in the dryer was well supervised. : O Lucy is in the back, Holly in the front.

Dear adopting families, thank you SO much for taking the time from your busy lives to share the stories and photos too! We love your kitties and it is always so wonderful to see your beautiful babies all grown-up and hear how well they are doing.  We appreciate you sharing your kittens with us!  THANK YOU!

A Kitten Connection

DSC_0452

Tanya has ben following the IBKC since our early days. She found her way to us when the Picketts were in residence -- they were the fourth litter litter, I think.

She's fallen in love with a kitten or two over the years, and though she was very tempted at times, did not step forward to claim one.

All of these adorable Dinichi kittens were giving Tanya a serious case of kitten fever and I noticed she was leaving a lot of comments on all of these cuties on the blog, Facebook, and Instagram, too. She was dazzled by all the Dinichis, but completely smitten with Tegan.

So, I sent her this note.

Hi Tanya,

I've seen you post a whole lot of comments on our dear little Tegan. You've got a good eye for kittens and the ones you seem to fall for are the extra-shiny, extra-special ones. She is no exception. In fact, part of my brain keeps thinking I need to have the "can we keep her" conversation with Craig.

I haven't started meet and greets yet, though Russell is spoken for, but if you're at all serious about your love for this girl, let me know. I'm not pressuring you by any means, I just wanted to say your instincts are spot-on, and if you feel like adding to your nest, you couldn't possibly make a better pick. She, indeed, is a special one.

I hope all is well with you and you're having a good summer.

xo xo Laurie

In all these years of fostering, I had never reached out like this to anyone before, but my gut just told me I needed to say something.   I truly did not want to pressure her in any way, but I just saw this connection happening for Tanya,  and I just felt I had to say something before someone else stepped in and scooped Tegan up.

She responded instantly and enthusiastically.  She was sitting at her computer that very second my message arrived because she was in the middle of sending a video of Tegan to Brian, her sweetheart, who was out of town for work.

Before they moved forward with anything, they needed to have a serious discussion about this. They have two adult cats already, and wanted to think about their happiness and how bringing a kitten into their lives might change things.

After some good talking,  much thinking,  and a few questions about Tegan for me, they decided to come meet her.

And of course,  when they met her in person,  after a few happy squeals , "Where do we sign?" were the first words out of Tanya's mouth.

They were enchanted by the delightful girl!

I've gotten lots of messages from Tanya since they brought their baby home.  They are deeply in love with her and she speaks of her kitten with much joy in her voice.  It's so very sweet.

Because they're so concerned with the happiness of Sasha and Mishka, their big cats, they've been exercising patience and taking introductions slowly. Things are progressing nicely and they are well on their way to a harmonious home!

Brian, Tanya, Sasha, Mishka, and Tegan --  we wish you all of the happiness in the world!  I do believe that kitten was destined to be a part of your family, and it thrills me to no end that this connection happened!

Scuffle in the Sunlight

Well, they're gone. Cassie, Russell, Tegan and Dinah have all left our nest.

Wylla is shuffling around the living room right now chasing a sparkle ball -- you can tell she's a little bored and missing her little playmates.

Bean is sitting in the middle of sun patch, that same space the kittens are playing in in the photos below, and is watching Wylla run.  She misses the kittens too, but I also think she's glad to have a quieter house once again.  Normally, when she needs a break from the babies, she slips upstairs and finds a quiet spot. But when it's too hot to hang out upstairs, which it has been the past couple of weeks, she has no choice but to share the coolest spots in the house with them.  She enjoys the kittens, but Bean needs to take her uninterrupted naps. Bean needs her alone time.

As I mentioned before, our little Dinichis found some great families. On Monday I will start sharing all of their adoption tales with you.  We've got some sweet stories to tell, and I think you'll enjoy them!

I'm going to be heading to Iowa to visit my family next week, so we won't be getting a new batch of kittens immediately, but as soon as I return we'll pick up a new set! They're still flooding into the shelter, so shouldn't have any sort of wait.

Because I'll be gone, I'm going to be putting the IBKC Shop in vacation mode starting Monday, August 29th.  To say "I'm sorry for this inconvenience," I've decided to have a little sale this weekend and we're offering  20% off of  EVERYTHING in the shop.  To take advantage of the discount, just enter "CATLOVER" in the appropriate field upon checkout. The sale ends Sunday at 11:59 PM (pacific time). To visit our shop, click HERE.

Have a great weekend everyone!  We'll see you Monday!

Final Family Portraits

DSC_0707

The Dinichi's have been trickling out the door over the past few days and it won't be too much longer before they'll all be gone.

It seems we all fell pretty hard for this set, so I know we'll be missing them dearly.   We've found some stellar homes for them, so don't worry,  their futures are bright.  I've already gotten reports that the ones that have left our nest are doing really great.  No surprise there! They are all so social and well-adjusted, of course they transitioned easily!

Before we started saying your goodbyes, I  did get manage to wrangle everyone and get a couple of family portraits in.   Thank you for sitting still, kittens, and giving us all a chance to look at you big, healthy babies all together for one last time.

You four are amazing. I hope you know how much joy you brought us all during stay at the IBKC.  You will be missed by many!

I wanted to say thanks to everyone who purchased a set of our Kitten Magazine postcards. They flew out the door -- we've never had a set sell out so fast!  I'm trying to decide if I'll do a second printing or not. I do have other cards in the queue, so I may wait until after I release those, and maybe reprint the Kitten Magazine cards for the holidays.  I'll keep you posted on that -- I haven't quite decided what I'm going to do yet.

I appreciate the support!  It does help off-set the expenses of fostering. As you can imagine, we go through a LOT of kitty litter around here!

: )
