The Perfect Pairing

DSC_7897

When Hurley Huddleston's adoption fell through at the last minute, and we were scrambling to find him a home, Andrea contacted me expressing interest in the boy.  She sounded like she could offer a wonderful home to a kitten, but someone else had reached out to me first, and they adopted dear Hurley.

I told her there would be more kittens soon, and once our Five Fellows arrived, she came over and met the crew.

As I mentioned in Maurice and Emmet's adoption tale, I normally don't interject my opinion unless asked when folks are picking out their kittens.  But with this special bunch, I did offer some pairing suggestions.  Andrea and I discussed in great detail each possible set, and she decided that Robin and Oakley would be her choice.

I was thrilled with her selection! Robin and Oakley wrestle in the same weight class and have always enjoyed a tussle together.  Also, Robin being the outgoing Fellow that he is, would be the perfect mate for his introverted brother.

The boys had some growing to do, and though the wait was excruciating for Andrea,  it gave Oakley a little more time to come out of his shell.  In his last few days with us, we saw some big changes in his personality, and suddenly this boy who was always dashing to the shadows was out in the world! He was comfortable, purring, and belly-up!  I'm so proud of this progress he made.

Does THIS look like a scaredy-kitten?  Nope.

Andrea is a kind and loving human who lives a quiet life. I know the home she's offering sweet Oakley and Robin is the perfect one for them.  She'll be patient through their transition, which is exactly what they need.

We always find such good people to adopt our kittens -- we're so lucky that way.   I am so thankful that the families that adopted this round of kittens presented themselves when they did --- I don't think we could have possibly made more perfect matches than this

The babies landed exactly where they were supposed to land -- in the arms of some very nice people who will nurture and love them forever.

I am so very grateful.

A Bowl Full of Crazy

DSC_7384

Seymour, Oakley, and Robin went in to get snipped yesterday and returned wide-awake and full of crazy around 5:00 PM.

I put the kitten-filled carrier on the living room floor near Charlene and Wylla, who were trying their best to cool their bellies on this hot afternoon.

I opened the door, the boys gave the girls a quick hello sniff, then ran full-speed to their room and started wrestling.  Even though the afternoon sun made this room ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house, they didn't seem to mind -- I think they were just really happy to be in their familiar space after a day spent at the shelter.

They paused the game for a snack, I pulled down the shade, then closed the door hoping they would settle down now that their bellies were full.  For a few minutes I heard the rustling of mylar balls and scuffling kittens, then a long silence followed by a loud crash.

I went to investigate and discovered that someone, I'm guessing Seymour because he was the rowdiest yesterday, had climbed up on the table and knocked the stainless steel bowl off of the kitten scale.

The bowl was the perfect size to contain two kittens, and Seymour and Robin were enjoying a tussle inside. The slippery surface made it extra fun.  Seymour won the match, and Robin hopped out and joined Oakley, who was half asleep on the bed.

Seymour spent the next few minutes flopping around inside the bowl on his own and chasing his tail until grew tired, then climbed out and joined his brothers.

It was entertaining to watch, but I was grateful that everyone settled down -- it was a hard day for our little guys. They needed to take it easy.

Robin the Opossum

When Robin was tiny and hissy, we used to joke that he looked like an opossum. He was ridiculous, and it was impossible not to laugh at this fierce creature. Even though he stopped hissing a long time ago, the label kind of stuck and we still call him an opossum on occasion.

Craig had the macro lens out yesterday and took a few pics.  When I uploaded photos this morning, I discovered this awesome opossum shot that he captured.   Thank you, Craig!

Seriously, folks? Opossum or kitten mouth? What do you think?

I thought I might get things heating up a bit by starting a very do-abe afternoon matching donation challenge. An anonymous lover of kittens offered up a  generous $500 match for us that will end at 7:00 (Pacific Time) tonight.

SO, for every dollar we give, she'll do the same until we reach the $500 cap.

Let's jump right in and get this match met!  Let's help some homeless cats and kittens (and Opossums?) out!

Big thanks to our anonymous lover of kittens for offering up this generous gift to us this afternoon and to all who participate in this match! Thank you!

Awesome Opossum!

Five Fellows in the Window

DSC_6948

I know so many of us will be off having fun and celebrating the 4th of July, so I decided I would probably be wasting my time trying to wrangle donations all day, SO, I'll ask once today, then leave you all be!

We had a good run yesterday, and we're getting REALLY close to the half-way point.  I can't wait until we cross that mark -- it always feels so good to be on the other side of it.  Thank you so much to everyone who's played a part in getting us that far. I appreciate you all so much!

If you want to toss a little in the kitty today,  please visit our FUNdraising page to make a tax-deductible donation. Or if you want to learn a little more about what we're raising money for and how our donations will be used, you'll find lots of information there.
_____

I've got a big batch of photos of our Five Fellows to share today. They were being even more adorable than they usually are (can you believe that?) and put on a show in our window.

We'll be wrapping up their chapter soon, so I'll be savoring the moments like this.

Please be safe, everyone. Get your critters inside and keep them there all day and night -- it's not a fun holiday for our four-legged friends.

I'll post some more on Instagram today, but just once here on the blog.
See you here tomorrow!

Happy Fourth!

Beginning the Goodbyes

You probably noticed how big our Fellows have been getting, so this news shouldn't come as too big of a surprise, but it's time to start saying goodbye to the guys.

We had our first round of send-offs earlier today. The rest will leave at the end of the week.

It's never easy saying goodbye, but with this batch, it will be especially hard. We had to spend a lot more time working with this crew to help them become more confident kitties. We've got the know them really well and we will miss these dear things.

They did find some amazing homes though, and I honestly can't imagine a brighter future for any of them.

But still.  Goodbyes are hard.

Please don't forget we've got an awesome match happening today.  An anonymous donor will be TRIPLING our donations until we max out the $1500 match!  Please don't miss out on this one  -- it helps our donations go three times as far!  It runs until 7:00 PM Pacific Time tonight.

We've been having a pretty quiet day so far and we still have $1140 left to complete the match.  If you can help us get a few dollars closer to maxing it out, we sure would appreciate it!

To make a tax-deductible donation, please visit our FUNdraising page!

Thank you so much!
