It's March, Where are They?

This morning I woke up thinking that we should be seeing kittens any day now.  January and February are always the quietest months, but in March it seems that things start picking up. I went into the blog archives to see if we were holding kittens on March 17th of the previous years,  and discovered that more years than not, we did.

March 17th 2015:
No kittens, just the big cats! But we were still sidelined after the ringworm incident that fall, so even if there were kittens at the shelter, we couldn't have them.

But we had this silly thing to keep us entertained that DAY.

No kittens on March 17th of 2014, but we had an update on Opal the Kitten (not Opal the Human). We were still taking a break because of Filbert's virus at this time, so no kittens for us.

On March 17th of 2013, we had Wylla and Audrey, and they were tiny.  We were in the thick of it with Wylla, and trying to get to the bottom of her health issues. She had just returned from spending a few days in Vet Treatment where she got poked, prodded, and tested for everything. It was a hard time for her. And it was hard for us too -- so much worry.

On March 17 of 2012, the Knapps had JUST arrived the day before and we got to meet little Wylie.

Gosh, that nose. Just look at that nose.

On March 17th of 2011, we had the seriously cute Medley family in our care. Egads!

No kittens on March 17th in 2010, and Bean was BORED.  The Spooners had just left the week before, and the Lytteltons would move in one week later.

On March 17th of 2009, we had the Ashbys.  Milton, who was the biggest, was getting close to making weight!

On March 17th of 2008, we were midway through the Mayfield litter. Here's pensive little Porter.

This give me hope, folks. Historically, we usually have kittens in March, so hopefully we'll be seeing them SOON!

FINGERS ARE CROSSED!

Update on Opal the Kitten (Not Opal the Human)

Oh.joy! I just got an update on Opal the Kitten (not Opal the Human) from her mama Kami!

Remember what a cute little bug she was?

Here's what Kami had to say!

Hi Laurie,

First, CONGRATULATIONS on your book! It looks adorable and I am planning to buy a couple of copies. It is so cool that my kitty is in a blog and a book!

Second, I've been meaning to email you an update about Opal! She is doing great, I can't believe we've had her for 2 and half years already. Opal has a feisty personality and makes her thoughts known easily. She is curious about everything and loves people better than her big kitty sister, Zoe. They tolerate each other at best... She is a perfect companion for us people though! She has seasonal allergies, her eyes get very puffy and red in May when the Scotch Broom starts to bloom. A yearly allergy shot seems to do the trick.

Opal became a fur-sister in August when we welcomed human baby Henry into our family. She is very good with Henry and loves to be around him. So far, she seems to understand that she needs to be careful with him. The other day I had to extract her from his crib because she wanted to join him for a nap. He is starting to become very curious about the cats.

Thanks for matching us up with such a great kitty. We love Opal and she has made our lives much more interesting. :-) I think one of Henry's first words will be OPAL because I'm constantly saying her name (Opal, leave the TV alone, Opal, leave Zoe alone, and so on).

 -Kami

PS I included a picture of Zoe too, she is also a kitty from the Tacoma Humane Society. We adopted her about a year and a half before Opal.

Thanks so much for sending the update, Kami! Opal grew up to be such a lovely lady. Her human brother and kitty sister are both adorable! Congratulations on both!

Opal in the Snow

As you all probably heard, our little corner of the country got hit with a heap of snow.   I just got home from my travels, and fortunately missed all of the mess.

Kami, Opal McGillicuddy's mom, just sent me this adorable picture.

They took Opal out for a brief supervised outing in the snow.  She didn't enjoy the cold too much, so after they snapped the picture, she dashed right back into the house and warmed her paws and buns on the heating vent.

SO, yes.  I am back.   I put a request in for kittens at the shelter, so hopefully we'll be seeing some soon!

Opal Doesn't Live Here Anymore

Our little Opal left us this week.  She found a fabulous family, and she loves them.  In fact,  she hasn't stopped purring since she moved in.

She's got a big sister, Zoe, who's two years old.  They're still getting used to each other, but I bet it won't be too much longer before they love each other too.

When Kami and Chris, Opals new parents,  came to meet the kittens, Opal was quite excited to meet them.  She climbed into Kami's lap and spent most of their visit right there, being cute and charming.

The other two bounced around and came by to say hello, but it seemed they knew Opal would be the "chosen one" so they weren't trying too hard to be dazzling.   Besides, there were ping-ping balls to chase.

After just a little discussion, they decided Opal should be theirs, and we filled out all the adoption paperwork.

Chris brought the carrier inside and Opal hopped right in.

The McGillicuddy girls said their goodbyes, and away she went.

Kami sent us a nice little update already.  Here's what she had to say...

"Just wanted to let you know that Opal is doing so well in her new home!  She is so sweet and loving; we are definitely in love.  She absolutely loves being held and pet.  She is currently fast asleep on Chris's shoulder, it is pretty cute.  She certainly has a little motor on her, and has not stopped purring since we brought her home yesterday. "

Sounds like a perfect match, doesn't it?
Hooray!

Opal the Human Meets Opal the Kitten

DSC_0175

Opal the Human came by today with her mom, little brother and her new puppy! The toddler and puppy sounds sent Victoria and Cheryl scrambling under the couch.

Opal the Kitten was not flustered one bit and was quite curious about Opal the Human's entourage.

She didn't even run when an unpredictable Ellis came her way.

And she was even OK when Maxine took one of her sparkle balls.

And she was quite happy spending time in Opal the Human's lap.

Chomp Chomp

The girls are going through a nibbly stage right now.  All litters do, and it usually happens around the eight week mark.

For awhile, they would chew on anything - each other, themselves,  or any toy within chomping distance.   They're bedroom got nicknamed "The Alligator Den".

Thankfully, I think they're nearing the end of it.  Day by day, they're turning into well-mannered little lady-cats.

Chillin' and Squeakin' (and some purring)

First of all, thanks so much for the many kind words yesterday.   I'm happy the little photo collection was so well received!      It was a whole lot of fun taking a trip down memory lane and sharing it all with you!

This morning we've got a little movie.  Be sure to turn up the volume so you can hear all the squeaks and purrs!  Enjoy!
