Cat House Revisited

For many months the cardboard kitty house was in the living room. I noticed the girls weren't spending much time in it, so I thought I would try it in a new location, and moved it upstairs.

They've worked it into their game of chase, and it's the "safe house" where they'll take turns catching a breath. Charlene needs to catch a few more breaths than Wylla, and has been spending more time in it than she ever has. There's only one door to the house, and pesky Wylla likes to block it and trap Charlene inside. It's been the site of many squabbles.

It's held up well, although someone has been gnawing on it. You can see "kitty staples" around all the window holes. I ended up reinforcing the house with clear packing tape because the girls kept collapsing it. That seems to have really help extend the life of it.

I now a lot of you purchased these houses too. Are yours still standing?

Thanks for sharing all of your stories yesterday! If you didn't get a chance to read the comments on yesterday's post, be sure you do. There are many great tales of mischievous cats to entertain you!

  1. I also reinforced mine with packing tape, but my cats like to lie on the roof and fight through the chimney (weirdos!) which has severely compromised the structure.

  2. Ours is reinforced with staples and the walls are still standing. However, the roof doesn't want to stay on. Riza and Mei like to stick their paws out the window and bat at their trackball toys.

    1. For Christmas, 2013, I bought Kitty Stacks, modular cardboard kitty forts, for my Buddy and Tiger. They're rather expensive, $15 each, but, hey, it was Christmas. The cubes are no where as cute as the kitty houses, but they serve the same purpose.

Over a year later, they're still holding up. My boys are on the large size, 16 and 12 pounds, and I've added a rambunctious (large-ish) kitten to the mix.

Here's a link to their site if you'd like to check it out.

    3. I don't see your link but is it Catty Stacks? Google turned that one up and the price point matches. I missed out on the Christmas kitty house and have been wondering if there was something similar. If this is yours, thank you for the recommendation.

  6. While I did not get this cat house, could not survive 2 hefty Maine Coons, I do know well the game of "Cat Tag". Very sneaky of the little miss to trap the elder in the house. I have learned to stay on the couch with my feet up until the "Cat Tag" has run from the basement, thru the living room and around the bedrooms on the 2nd floor and back down...twice. Two laps and both beasts are pooped.

  7. Reggie's house is still standing. I had to use packing tape to keep it in one piece (thanks for the tip!). She loves to sleep in it and beside it. She also drags her toys in there for safekeeping.

  8. White Sox still loves her house and uses it as home base whenever we play. We had to duct tape it because cat furr-icanes would descend in the night and destroy the structure regularly. Though she has only one front paw, White Sox likes to use the scratchy floor--just to show us she can! The funniest part is when she tries to stick her head through the windows or chimney to attack a feather toy. I'm glad WS and CB still enjoy their house too; White Sox was wondering. :)

  11. Ours I almost immediately had to reinforce by taking plain white wool yarn and tying the walls together and the roof to the walls. Lately, I had to stitch up a tear in the doorway from where two of my girls were playing a little too roughly. (If I had known how much they love it, I'd have stocked up when they went on clearance...)

  12. I don't have one of these houses but isn't it funny how they establish a base and everybody seems to know and accept it as such. The two I have now won't play together. But my former 2 used a large basket as base. I miss the tag games.

  14. My husband also taped it. The outdoor cat uses it when she comes in the evening. Our big boy Tibbers is unhappy because he can't collapse it anymore.
