Twenty Things You Probably Don't Know About Drewey

DSC_0176

1. Drewey is originally from Martha's Vineyard.

2. She belonged to a former landlord, and as a young lady, rode across the country with him in a pick-up truck. They stayed with us for a summer while he renovated our house in Seattle and eventually, she became our cat.

3. She was originally named Milo, then our landlord changed it the Drouet, then Drewey. Now, her full name is Little Drewey Junebug. Her nicknames: Drewski, Drewster, Rooster, Roost, Rooster Bean. I think we call her Rooster most of all.

4. She had a litter of kittens at a very young age, and wasn't a very good mother. (according to the landlord) Somewhere I have a photo of one of her kittens. If I can find it, I'll share it with you.

5. In her younger days, she was quite the mouser and birder and was constantly leaving her prizes on the doorstep.

6. When we lived in our old house in Seattle, she would climb up on the roof and plant her booty on the skylight. It was quite a view from below.

7. She disappeared once and returned a week later looking quite skinny. Lord only knows where she was.

8. She's an excellent communicator.

9. She's both stubborn and patient.

10. She's an excellent judge of character.

11. If she wants to wake you up, she'll walk across the alarm clock to turn on the music. If that doesn't work, she'll lick your eyelids.

12. She's happiest while napping in the sun on the deck.

13. As a young lady, her favorite toy was the cellophane from a cigarette pack. (our landlord was a smoker).

14. As an adult, her favorite toy is her "Ratnip Lovedoll" made by my friend Monika. She doesn't play with it much, but every once in awhile she'll take a roll with it and give it a few bunny kicks to it's belly.

15. She does not like the sound of (human) babies crying. Not even on TV.

16. She would never admit that she likes Charlene, but I believe a part of her does. I think Charlene keeps her young, or at the least, on her toes.

17. Drewey was my first cat. She TOTALLY converted me from "dog person" to "cat person".

18. She likes to lick salt off of tortilla chips.

19. She likes to lick the salt off of Craig (post soccer game).

20. She's not as grumpy as she looks. She really is a sweet, lovely girl who doesn't like getting her picture taken.

  1. Aw, what sweet girl. I love little old lady cats, and have one myself (Pembrose). She, too, loves to lick the salt from my husband, and is actually obsessed with licking the bald top of his bald head. :-) It's nice to see more of Drewey :-D

  2. Drewey seems like a wise little lady! I wish she got more screen time but I understand that she likes her privacy.

  3. What a great post, Laurie. Drewey is often the Art Garfunkel to Charlene's Paul Simon so it was great to learn more about Le Grande Dame.

  4. What a story Drewey has. She is beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Drewey is a beauty! Her stare is just like my Ginger...who is only 3 now but a "little old lady in training". I hope to have a long time with Miss Ginger just like you have had with Drewey.

  6. What a lovely Drewey history. Thank you for sharing.

  7. I thought I was crazy about Drewey...er, Ms. Junebug...before but now....just WOW. She might not be crazy about paws on mothering but look at all the mothering the result of her capturing your heart has caused. Congrats, Drewey. You are a wonderful old girl.

  8. Well, all I can say is that it's HIGH TIME that Drewey got some blog time! :) I bet she was quite a mouser in her day. Go, girl!

  9. Drewey is a complicated gal and we love her for it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ah Drewey, you remind me of my dearly beloved Q who crossed the Bridge last year... he had that same grumpy, patient, wise look that you have. Must be something about kitties in their twilight years.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And now I actually love her more. Licks your eyelids? That made me laugh pretty hard.

    ReplyDelete
  12. she's lovely. my cat (RIP) used to lick our ears to wake us up.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thank you from a Drewey fan! Swoon!!!

  14. Must be a little old lady thing, but my little old lady kitty Abigail, aka as Miz Peezy, used to kiss me goodnight by licking my eyelids. The first few nights she was gone I had a hard time getting to sleep without that kiss.
God bless all the little old lady cats out there. And a special blessing for Drewey who is the Dowager Queen to Ms. Bean's Crown Princess.
Just went up to get the mail and there was Charlene beaming out the box...via the new issue of PawTalk;)

  15. Wow - Drewey is a ladycat of a certain age with quite a past! What a character! No wonder we all adore her!

  16. so glad to hear more about Drewey <3 My Oliver loves the salt off of potato chips too. ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  17. Love love love Drewey. Yay for older cats

    ReplyDelete
  18. All great ladies have an interesting past! Good for her. I am so happy that you use the term 'bunny kicks' too. We have boy kitties and they play rough - thus they are known as the 'vicious bunny kicks'.

  19. Aw she is a cutie. And it is funny about the cellophane because our kitties growing up loved that too (my parents were smokers). My current cats have also been known to lick the salt off tortilla chips, and also french fries.

  20. LOL at #6 - the skylight. That's hilarious!
Drewey sounds a lot like my Yoko. Somethin' about those old gals.

  21. Ms Drewey, I admire your style and that you stick to your preferences. You inspired a great thing for this world, thanks for converting Laurie & Craig.

The licked eyelids make me think of my "younger" cat (Marbles, age 12-ish). Before my CPAP if I slept in 20 minutes too late, she would nip the bit of my nose between my nostrils!
Now she nips my jaw or chin, or sits oh-so-precisely on the ON\OFF button of the CPAP.

I would love to see a photo of the skylight and Ms. Drewey along with one of her kittens. That had to be a sight to be seen. Drewey is quite the beauty in this photo. My first kitty use to like to wash my face. I use to say it was my "spa" time and was getting a kitty loofa. I miss her still.

  23. She looks like a perfectly sweet oldladycat!
And hey, I see in the Humane Society mailing that Charlene Butterbean is famous!! What a lovely photo of her.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you Drewey for converting Laurie into a cat person. Think of how many itty bitty kitties wouldn't have been fostered and think of how many humans wouldn't have had their days brightened by this blog.

  25. Wonderful post! I love grand old dames and loved learning about Miss Drewey's colorful past! Snorggles, honey! (I know you like 'em... our Grumplegreykins has the same looks and they are deceiving, too!)

  27. After reading this, Drewey reminds me of my mother's mother. The older that great lady got, the more decided and sometimes difficult she got. But, as far as i can tell, once any of us reaches a certain age we are entitled a our fair share of crankiness!

Much love for Drewey. May we all aspire to have lives as full as she has once we reach her age!

    ReplyDelete
  28. There's nothing like a list of 20 reasons to love a dear comfy old girlie. I'm sure you could write 20 more and keep on going. Snorgles to Drewey and hugs to her humans!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I didn't think it was possible but I just feel even more in love with Drewey. Thanks for sharing her secrets with us!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for sharing 20 things about Drewey. It is good to see a senior cat so well loved. Even if The Bean makes her cranky sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love Drewey posts & pics! She is so precious!! Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If not for Drewey, you may not have become a cat person and the IBKC may not be in existence. So many kittens and us followers owe her a ton of gratitude!!!! Thanks Drewey, you beautiful old lady!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I concur - even if Drewey's not the foster kitty mama that Charlene is, without her we wouldn't have the IBKC. I dearly love her little old lady cranky self, but it's interesting to know that she's not as cranky as she looks. Loved to learn her personal history too -- the stories she could tell us, I'm sure!

  34. There is just something about Drewey that captured my heart the first time I saw a picture of her...what a sweetie!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Dear Drewey: You are an inspiration. I too want to have a storied past when I am a little old lady. Keep demanding the respect and luvin's you deserve, and I am sure your humans will keep giving them to you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yay, Drewey. Us cranky old ladies rule! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. oh sweet drewey. i too have a sweet, shy girl with the surliest face.

    p.s. LOVE #6!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Drouet -- was Drewey a kitty of French origins???

So glad to see more of you, Miss D.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I agree with all before me - and there is a Certain Something about a genteel elderly lady cat. My cherished Evangeline had a litter 'too young' too; when I got her she was perhaps JUST a year old, and had been brought into the Shelter with her sister and a shared litter of seven kits. "Soiled Doves", Drewey and Ev, but Drewey in her dotage deserves Life as She Would Have It. Yes - to her, gratitude; to you, Laurie, delight for your "conversion"!

    ReplyDelete
  40. :gasp: She was called Milo and yoo changed it?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my sainted aunt! A treasure trove of Rooster Bean trivia. This *is* my lucky week. I didn't know any of these facts, but if I'd given it any thought, I bet I'd've somehow known 8, 10, 12 & 20 were true.

And, having a checkered past myself, I deeply appreciate the Dowager Drewey and how she's turned her life to good purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yay Drewey! I love that cats know to go for our eyelids to wake us up -- my Zellie pokes me in the eye to wake me up.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So sweet! My Wilsey likes to like salt off of tortilla chips and sometimes his momma's forehead when she's been working and sweating extra hard.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I want to see skylight booty pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  45. She is so adorable! My little Bella walks across my alarm clock a turns the music on in the morning to let me know it is breakfast time. I know she is no longer with us. My thoughts are with you and Craig. Bella has vowed to keep one of Drewy's antics alive.
