Wild Boys

DSC_5842

As you can imagine, we have a lot of kitten toys around here. We try to rotate them frequently to give the kittens a variety of experiences, but also to find out what their favorites are so we can share this with their soon-to-be parents.

This weekend we pulled out one of Bean's favorites -- it's a furry, bouncy fringe toy on the end of a wand. I'm sure there's a name for it, but I don't know what is is.

It was an instant hit with our Fishkins, and just like that pom-pom on a stick we shared on Friday, it got them all growly, excited and fierce.

We played with it for a long stretch in the afternoon, and when I got tired (because you'll never wear a kitten out) I tucked it between the couch cushions and called the game officially "over".
Later that evening I heard a clackity-clack sound accompanied by thundering kittens hooves coming from the main floor. I came downstairs to investigate this cacophony, and discovered two boys running wild, chasing each other,  and dragging the wand toy all over the house.

It's probably not the safest way to play with the wand, but they sure were having a grand time, so I let them run with it for a bit and took a short video before any damage was done. I knew you all would want to see this too!

They did their final lap with the wand, I took it away and hid it out of their sight, tossed them a couple of mylar balls and they seamlessly transitioned to a heated soccer match.

Here's the video:  It starts off with the boys playing with the toy properly, and ends with the pair running wild.

Enjoy! And be sure to turn up the volume so you can hear Sidney's growls and all of the ka-thump, ka-thump, ka-thumps!

  4. Those are Teddy's favorite toys. Almost every night after I've gotten into bed, he will drag both of them up the stairs while singing the Song of His People. In the afternoon sometimes he drags them back downstairs. I love them because he can't chew through the leather 'string' like, say, Da Bird.

  7. Such mighty, mighty hunters you have there! Never giving up on the hunt, never giving one's brother the wand and never running silently. Well done!

  11. This video is TOO precious! I both love it and am glad that its happening at your house instead of mine lol. My favourite part was when they came pelting out of the kitchen and the wand-bearer stopped and the other one kept going and wiped out a bit. Slippery floors and kittens make for hilarious moments like that!

  12. I think you need to rename Sid Fishkin to Sid Vicious.

  14. The Fishkin twins just keep getting cuter!

Our Miles (not quite two years old) also loves dragging wand toys all over the house. We'll hear the wand bumping up or down the wooden stairs at all hours.

A note of caution: at one point Miles cut the corner of his mouth while dragging the wand around. The wand got stuck on a piece of furniture, and Miles came to none too gentle a stop when that happened. His mouth healed in a few days, but he was very sad that he could only play wand toy under supervision for those days.

  16. My Tommy carries a feather wand toy around the house in his mouth like a flamenco dancer holding a rose in his teeth.

  18. I thought you were exaggerating when you said they "thundered"... Haha. These two are a blast! Surely they'll be adopted together since there are only two of them? Yes? Please? Even if they'll love whatever other cat that's in the household they're adopted to, there must be a special bond between siblings.

That toy is awesome btw. I like that the fringe is of actual heavy suede. And the 'string' too, I think (before my girl cat ate half of it).
