Drum Roll, Please!!

DSC_0542

Well the surname auction ended and I'm happy to introduce to you...

The Dinichi Family!!!

Stephanie, our high bidder, explains the story behind their selection:

So, my husband Eric is a little bit obsessed with potatoes. We decided that our next cats would be named after potatoes, but not in English - that would be too obvious. A little work with Google Translate later, and we came up with Dinichi. It's the transliteration of the word in Amharic, which is a Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia. It's strange, but that's what we do. :)

I love your adorable pick and the story behind it, Stephanie and Eric!   I look forward to making many potato puns, too!

Thanks so much for your very generous bid! We appreciate your support SO much.

Yay! And the first first name auction just ended, so soon we will learn the name of our Tortie girl. The next auction will go live shortly.

And please don't forget, we've got a $2500 match on the table! It's going awfully slow. Awfully, awfully slow today and I'm hoping we can turn it around and complete it! We need to hit these matches to keep things on course so we can reach that goal!  SO, if you have a sec, please pop on over to our page and make that donation you've been meaning to give.

Thank you so much!   Be back soon with more!!

"No defects or missing parts" indeed, this crew has spare parts! Maybe the thumbs will come in handy for...peeling potatoes? Or catcher's mitts for playing hot potato?
What a cute little crop of spuds they are!

We all have our obsessions - my cat is named for tea and the puppy for a tree. :-)

  5. Nice to meet you, Dinichi family! Love the background story on the name choice. I agree that "Dinichi" sounds better than "Potato." : )

  7. Is the ch in Dinichi hard or soft? Just curious how to pronounce it.

Well, that's a half-baked reason for a surname! Ha ha, couldn't resist. I love the story behind the name.

  9. I love the tortie girl. She looks like the one I have now, down to the little off-center "goatee".

  10. I asked Stephanie and she said: It took some digging, but it looks like the "ch" is pronounced like the "ch" in "chips", and all of the the "i"s are short but the last one. So, Dih-nih-chee.

    1. My stupid computer had it showing as Dlnlchl....as in NO VOWELS. I was scratching my head until I saw all the "l" were "i". lol

    2. That was my uneducated guess. Thanks for confirming.

    3. OOOOH!!! Rupert thought that those "i"s were "L"s. His tongue was all twisted and Clovis was laughing at him. I'll pass that on. He'll feel much better. :)

    4. My Ethiopian coworker says he would pronounce it Duh-nih-ch, with the last i basically silent. And by the way, explaining why I wanted to know this made him give me quite a funny look. :D "You read a blog about foster kittens? And they named the kittens the Amharic word for potato?" "Yep."

    5. We should probably go with the pronunciation given by a native speaker, as opposed to my Google searching. :) And now your coworker knows that on the internet, you can find anything!
