Party Animal

We had a little barbecue to celebrate Craig's birthday this weekend. Bean kept a low profile and napped upstairs during most of the party, but when we were down to the last few guests, she came downstairs, pulled up a chair, and joined us at the dining room table.

She does this at every party we host and I don't think really wants to mingle, she just needs to know what's going on.

And she doesn't really want a beer, she just needs to know what we're drinking.

What do your cats do when you entertain? Life of the party? Wallflower?

  1. I don't have parties, but my Mindy Lou has to greet everyone that comes into the house, while her brother Jesse James runs and hides under the bed.

  2. Reilly is a party animal but Sprite is not. So both hang out in the basement as guests are allergic.

  3. 4-6 extras in the house, pretty much part of the party. More than that and they disappear.

  4. My boys make themselves the center of attention. You'd think everyone is there to see them. The only exception is ladies' night - they greet everyone but as soon as the girl talk starts, they retreat to the far bedroom :-)

  5. I have a real social butterfly.

  6. Moo will come out and mingle for a bit, then retreat to her chair in the bedroom to take a nap. Every once in a while throughout the evening she'll poke her head out and wander through, reminding everyone that she's there.
Henry will hide under the covers of the bed until the party is over, and how dare you realize what that lump under the covers is DON'T PUT YOUR COAT ON ME.

  7. I don't know Laurie. Bean is looking a bit tipsy there :)
In our home, Casper is the party animal. He loves up to everyone, comes to say hello, lets everyone touch him and always wants to know what you're eating and drinking - not that he wants any, he just needs to know.
Cocoabean, conversely, is much more reserved amongst strangers. She the wallflower albeit, a very pretty one. She's hesitant to mingle one-on-one with guests, but at least, doesn't run away to hide.

  8. When I have friends over my girls hide at first (they don't like the door bell) but soon come out for pets and to sit in the sun. They don't seem to care one way or the other.

  9. Maggie supervises all of our guests from afar. She likes to be as far away as possible while still being able to make sure they aren't getting into any trouble. This is also her approach to the vacuum cleaner - she'll follow you around the house while you vacuum and peek her head into each room from the hallway.

  10. I have "many" kitties that reside in my home. I do not throw parties or have many guests over to my house. As a result, most of my babies hide when they hear unfamiliar voices.

  12. Depends on who the guests are and how many there are. But in general, Riza tends to disappear into the bedroom, and Mei stays around to supervise.

  13. My cats hide, except one, who stays at the fringes of the party and drives any cat people crazy, as she is too shy for touches! She is just nosy I think.
That is the coolest dining room table I think I have seen.

  14. Pippin loves EVERYBODY and wants to mingle. Smokey hides upstairs, usually perched on my computer chair, on or under the bed.

  15. Three of my four vanish. The fourth comes out of her usual hidey hole in my bedroom to greet HER guests, thank you very much! Go figure....

  16. Walk across the table, steal people's food, sometimes walk through it and without fail, stick their bottoms (which aren't always the cleanest) in the guests' faces. It gets embarrassing at times.

  17. Oh, and Happy Birthday, Craig!! :-)

  18. My cats are not social at all. They hide under the bed until everyone leaves.

  19. HBD, Craig!!! I'm sure the guests were suitably impressed with the new paint, and I hope they got to see the matching nose :-D

Jonah is too shy, and the doorbell is too scary, so he's usually hiding under the bed covers upstairs for gatherings. After several hours of no doorbell, he sometimes slinks down the stairs cautiously. If he knows the people (or their voices), he'll come down sooner. But any loud sound or startling motion will send him dashing back upstairs.

Daltrey, of course, owns the place, so she'll make the rounds. Once, I had a party for my fellow grad students, and there was one student who was not comfortable with cats, and we all knew this. The only one out of 30 guests. He got up from his seat to refill his glass of wine. You know, one of those "We're having a great conversation. Hold on, I'll be right back..." moments.

So. OF COURSE, even with several available seats in the room, Daltrey chose to go sit in *his* seat and start grooming her front paw. The other guests were so amused that one of them did a spit take (of a red wine - but on dark carpet, thank goodness). I couldn't do anything but shake my head, shoo Daltrey, and start cleaning up red wine. :-)

  21. When we have visitors, LG tends to hide on a different floor, either upstairs or in the basement. If he gets hungry at some point, he'll walk into a room adjacent to where we're all sitting and peek his head around the corner at me, which is my cue to bring his food to him so he can eat in privacy. Once in a while he'll actually make a brief appearance in the room where we're entertaining. He approaches either me or his dad and stays close to us while scoping out the guest(s).

  22. My Bisse is not interested in people at all. I'm not really, and she being a former street cat makes it even more so for her. On the other hand my Bilal is totally into people, and Shams, he's sort of in between. Once he warms up he loves people, luckily, though, that doesn't take too long.

  23. At just over a year our Fred is becoming the life of the party; he comes over and strolls along the table to make sure all the guests admire him before he retires to the shelf to oversee everything. Vic is a little younger and still shy; he'll come out and sit on my lap when things are quiet, but the least bit of rambunctiousness and he's under the bed. He's getting better, though.

  24. My mom's cats mostly stay in their room. Duchess can't be moved from her bed for much, so she just chills. Bella hides under the bed and pouts.

On the other hand, my Millie insists on getting to know everyone, and happily rubs against legs, meows loudly, and farts merrily (yes) as she entertains her adoring crowd.

    She's 16, she's earned it. ; )

  25. Galen is more reserved, he visits with his favorites, but almost never with big groups. Chase, on the other hand, we like to call his style "aggressively friendly." We've started having to let the delivery people in to say hello when we order pizza, etc, because otherwise he mopes at the door all night.

  26. Maren hangs out upstairs and will happily greet any guests who make the trip to see her. She loves to receive chin and tummy rubs from her adoring public.

Spenser runs and hides at the sound of footsteps on the porch and rarely makes an appearance until the house is quiet again.

Keith is our party animal, twining about people’s legs, marking them, sniffing, talking to them and generally charming everyone he meets.

  27. Beautiful Charlene Butterbean! When just the last few guests were still there, you decided to join everyone and be your gorgeous self! Purr-fect!

My cat used to hide under the bed when she heard someone she didn't recognize. Then when the person (or many people) were comfortably seated, she would come in the living room, walk around and sniff everyone a bit, and then hide under the love seat until they all left. She liked to be in the room but not have any attention paid to her.

  28. Guido Anchovy is the center of attention when I have people over. He's so friendly, he mostly just needs to sniff your hand first, and then he'll INSIST on being adored. Even if you don't want to adore him at that moment.

The upside is that everyone I know adores him, and if I ever needed to give him up, there would be a Hunger Games-style showdown over who got the honour lol. I regularly get threats of people coming to visit and leaving with him stashed in their suitcases :) And it's really easy to find someone to look after him when I'm out of town!
