It Takes a Village to Groom a Kitten

Because of her condition, Megaesophagus, Wylla doesn't do so well with hairballs.  I brush her a lot in hopes of catching those hairs before they get ingested, and Charlene helps with her grooming, too.  Bean has a much stronger constitution,  the ability to process hair well, and only yaks up an occasional hairball. I'm grateful she's able to help Wylla out.

Wylla does enjoy the bath and attention at first, but these grooming sessions are quite thorough and lengthy, and often before Bean is done getting her clean, Wylla reaches her limits, and baths often turn to brawls. You can see in this clip that the tails start swishing and they're nearing a scuffle. Fortunately, they decide that napping is a better idea, and all ends well.

I love that Bean is so willing to contribute to Wylla's care, too. We all work together to keep the wee one healthy.

  1. Oh Charlene! You are truly one in a million! I have one boy that loves to bathe the other kitties. But before he finishes, he decides that biting is much more fun than licking, and that's how the spat starts...

  2. Too cute! My three don't like each other very much, so no social grooming - I miss that.

  3. So sweet! Love seeing their size difference too. My guy, Louie is petite like Wylla, and when I still lived with my parents their 17lb/3'(when standing on hind legs) loved to bathe tiny Louie. I think that's one thing I miss watching most now that Louie is an only cat.

  4. Dear Bean! Now I have a new ambition in life -- to have a kitty as sweet and nurturing as Charlene the Beauty Queen!

  5. Poor Wylla, it must be such a hard life lying there having someone else clean you...
    Charlene: "I'm not finished."
    Wylla: "Yes you ARE."

  6. You really are lucky to have a "loves to groom other kitties" cat to pair with your "tummy doesn't like grooming sessions" cat! :)

  7. That slow blink that Wylla gives Bean towards the end speaks volumes. It was the moment they made peace in that small "brawl".

  8. You know you've lived with cats for a while when you're watching a video of two cats and you can tell almost immediately when things shift from contented bliss to potential stand-off and the only change is a slight change in how quickly one cat's tail is moving and the position of that cat's ears, and you know everything is fine again when that cat's ears shift slightly again. The other person in the room with you watches the video and has no idea what you're talking about. XD What ever would you do without Charlene?

  9. How precious. We’re very familiar with the bath-to-brawl progression here at our house. Spenser loves to groom Keith, but Keith isn’t so crazy about it and I could tell the exact moment in the video when Wylla was DONE.
