It's a Small World

DSC_1521

Their world is small, but that's all these wee kittens need right now.  Their bedroom is a plastic bin lined with lots of soft blankets. The lid is turned upside down and taped into place, leaving a gap wide enough to allow plenty of air in, but not big enough for kittens to escape through.  A quilt on top keeps the space dark, quiet and cozy.

Their bed has a microwavable heating disc beneath it.  It works perfect for the kitten quarters because it stays warm for 8 hours, and because it's not electric, there are no cords to worry about. The kittens love it.

They're going to the bathroom without any assistance now, and though it's not pictured here, they've got a tiny litter box inside the bin, too.

They spend most of their time sleeping, but come out for meals and recess. The "exercise yard" is soft, shaggy rug.

I've set up a wrestling ring in the yard.  A rolled blanket makes the boundaries of the ring.

They're really into wrestling right now. The victory usually goes to Effie because she has the weight advantage, but Hazel is a butt-biter, so she wins at least a couple of rounds.

It's funny to watch because they are still so clumsy.

They LOVE the rug, and when they're done playing,  and ready to nap again, they always calm themselves by making biscuits in the soft shag.

They're growing fast, so we'll have to upgrade their quarters soon, but for now, it's working well, and they seem really happy in their small world!

  2. I think Effie may be nursing on that shag rug as well!

I love that first pic - it seems to define their personalities already: Effie the Screamer, and Hazel the Worried

  3. They are so so so cute! So small! It's almost unbearable.

  4. they remind me of a kitten hair band from the 80's in the first pic, however poor little Hazel looks so sad.

  5. Many thanks for such a full picture of their happy little world! And warmest greetings to your two bigger girls.

  6. These two will be the death of me with their cuteness. I LOVE their living quarters...sounds just perfect for two wriggly babies. Also LMAO at butt-biter!!

  7. Gah! The nursing on the rug just sent me into a sugar coma from all the sweetness! :-)

  10. I wonder how wee Wylla is interacting/reacting to the even wee-er ones! I'd love to see that!

    1. The kittens are in quarantine, so Wylla hasn't met them yet.

    2. Since these are a lot younger than a lot of the other litters I've seen on your blog, is there a longer quarantine period or is it still about 2 weeks? Just curious.

    3. Quarantine is still the same - two weeks, or longer if they're showing any symptoms. Once they're past the quarantine, they wont have free run of the house, they'll still be penned up. Bean and Wylla will have visiting rights, assuming all goes well with introductions. We're just going to see how this all plays out, be sensitive to the needs of all felines, and proceed accordingly.

  11. Such adorable babies! I hope we can see a wrestling video soon -- especially Hazel butt-biting her sister. Hee!

  12. Hazel does indeed have peach-colored toes :)

  13. Just one week until quarantine is over. Well assuming you decide quarantine is over. You're the experts, but personally I'd wait a little while until they're a bit bigger. They sure are cute.

Off topic, where did you get that quit? I've had one on my bed for decades and it's getting a bit worn and need of repair. I'd send it to my aunt (who made it) to get fixed but I wouldn't have one in the meantime and I don't think I could sleep well without it.

    1. Thank you, Jason. We will take your advice into consideration.

I don't recall where the quilt came from. I've had it for years.

  14. What is the microwaveable heating disk? Is it sold at pet stores by itself, or is it something that only comes with the bed? I have a senior kitizen and he's always seeking warmth. I don't want to leave something plugged in if I'm not home and you said this stays warm for 8 hours.

    1. It's called a "Snuggle Safe", and you can buy them on Amazon. They're the best.

    2. I used one with my senior cat and it was perfect. He loved it.

  15. Thanks for the video of flicking kitten ears! Love Hazel's butt-biter tag. Just how old are these 2?

  16. How old are they ? Four weeks maybe ?

    1. Around four weeks now. It's hard to know exactly, though.

  17. I love them! I am so happy to see kittens again. It brings back such memories. :-) Our kitties love their sheepskin. I guess they think it is their mom since mom is such a distant memory now!

I think shag rug kitten biscuits are my new favorite thing! So adorable!

Poor worried Hazel, she doesn't quite understand yet that she's won the kitten lottery with you guys! But I'm sure it won't be long before that furrowed brow is replaced with pure relaxed contentment.

  21. Is it me, or would Shag Rug Kitten Biscuits be a good name for a band?

LG is a master biscuit maker, but it looks like these kittens are well on their way.

    I love Hazel's little face.

    That is all.

  22. They are adorable.
I was going to ask you about the microwaveable heating disk but I saw the answer above. I have been using a large beanbag but will look into the disk. My supplies are ready, I know the kittens are coming soon. We usually get a litter or two when we hold our spay/neuter events.

  23. I needed my kitten fix of your sweet babies, are they cute or what..God Bless you for your taking them in and spoiling and letting them thrive, it looks like it is some work, but for you not so much..How I pray that others can help all wee kitties that are abandoned..I give blankies and food to a no kill shelter up the gorge in the Vancouver area, they always appreciate the blankies and food and I pet the adorable ones and walk some dogs too. There was a man who complained about the dogs barking for real man I said? he chose to live by this place, they built a new shelter and the judge told the man if he did not like the doggies and kitties well guess he could move cause the shelter was not going to move..it drummed up lots of donations and people came and adopted some pets but most of all they got a big donation to build the new no-kill shelter and help this lady out who runs the whole shebang..smooches and hugs to those little darlings, they are so dad-blasted cute..I know Wylla & Bean will love them they are so adorable too!ciaoX()

  26. Oh, little Hazel... Don't you worry! You are in the best of hands and paws.

I'm so glad to see foster kitties here again. Hopefully Wylla remembers she was a foster once and learns from Charlene how to be a good auntie.

  27. I could handle such cuteness - and with the brothers! I remember when one of my cats had kittens, I wanted to keep them all, forever. These are beauty queens. I think my heart just exploded.

  28. Hazel's little white goatee may be the cutest thing I've ever seen. tiny squee.

  29. It's so funny to have read that Siamese Effie is a screamer and then see that first photo. I've always read that Siamese can be very vocal.

    1. I have Siamese, and it's true, they can be very vocal. Also, very opinionated. If Siamese cats were human, they'd be extremely effective activists. For what cause, I don't know, except probably dolphin-safe tuna.

    2. I have a short-haired cat of a tortoiseshell pattern, and it's hard to imagine any Siamese being more vocal than my cat. : )

  30. Wee Hazel has a bit of bed head, so very worried sweet bebe. I can't wait to see Charlene baff the wee girls.
