She Still Believes in Bed Mice

Wylla is growing up, but she still has her kitten innocence, curiosity, and life still holds many mysteries for her.

She's still captivated by little things like the shadow of her ear hair,  and bits of of dust floating in sunbeams.

She believes that feet and hands hidden under blankets are "bed mice", and with any subtle movement, she pounces on them like they're prey.

The springiness of pipe cleaners bring her huge amounts of joy.

I would love for her to grow bigger, but I'm in no hurry for her to grow up.  This kitten days are precious ones.

  1. Some cats are kittens forever. My 6 year old girl is still playful like this!

  2. Wylla is so precious! Her wide eyes and playful ways remind me of my little girl 'Lissa (short for Sweet Melissa). She is going on 5 years old and still a kitten at heart! She loves to run, play and cuddle just like Wylla.

  3. My kitties totally believe in bed mice and will forever, I expect! I've never heard them called that though--such a cute term.

  4. Plastic spring hair curlers are safer and better than pipe cleaners. We end up sending one with many of our foster kittens when they move on. Some cats never lose the joy of bed mice.

  5. My 11 month old is 12 pounds, but you wouldn't know it by the way she goes after the ping pong ball on the bathtub!!

    1. Did you get the idea for bathtub soccer from Laurie's post several years ago? :)

  6. Oh goodness I've never gotten such a good look at that fuzzalicious little nose before! I love the markings and her fuzzy little profile.

I have a rescued stray who took years to relax enough to play. Now, seeing her attack and subdue a threatening-looking ribbon can make my whole day.

  7. LG believes in them, too (I kinda wish he didn't). I *think* he's about 2 1/2 years old.

  8. How cute! But I'm a little surprised. She's already seen more things and been to more places that many other cats have done in their whole lives. Yet she is still curious about new things. I wonder if "Stepping about with Wylla Stout" has encouraged her curiosity.

  9. At nearly 2 my little Bisse is as whacked out as ever. I love my little crazy Bisse, and I hope she never changes! Considering this is my first Jordanian street cat I've ever raised (I brought her back with me after 4 months living outside of 'Amman) I don't know what to expect, and I'm hoping that Jordanian street cats are just whacked out like kittens their entire lives :)

  10. She is so precious!

For what it's worth, Melly is four and very grown up in a lot of ways, but she is still completely captivated by pipe cleaners (as well as by anything else that can be batted, swatted, kicked, or chewed). She also attacks bed mice just as vigorously as she did when she was a teeny fuzzy kitten. This is detrimental to my toes as she is now 12lbs of floof and pointy bits, but I don't have the heart to deprive her of her fun.

  11. Never fear... My sweet little Peanut, who is almost 18 years old, still pounces on those elusive bed mice, chases the laser pointer, and just last night re-discovered twister seals! Some of them retain that kitten-like quality throughout their lives,, I've a feeling that Ms Wylla will be one of those.

  12. My 11 year old cat still acts like a kitten. For an old lady she still runs around the house at lightening speed and attacks the mouse ona string like a killer.

  16. My six year old Marley is still obsessed with the reflections from a watch face in sunlight, laser pointer toys, beading wire, toes under blankets, snakie toys... he's still a 13lb kitten at heart! I hope Wylla never grows up either. Hmmm now where did I put those pipecleaners I bought the other day...? xx

  17. My mother's cat hunted bed mice until old age--one had to make sure to keep him out of the room when making beds.
