The Halloween Scene

Usually our block draws a pretty good crowd on Halloween -  thanks to our neighbor's festive display.

But this year, the trick-or-treater numbers were most definitely down.  Even though I was giving out candy by the handful, we still had lots of leftovers.  I would guess we had about a third of our usual traffic, which was a little disappointing.

But, that's OK. We still had fun.  Didn't we, Wylla?

Wylla slipped into her orange owl sweater, blended into the decor, and watched the halloween scene from the window last night.

Bean hung out with us for a spell, but really wasn't much in the spirit,  so she retreated upstairs to snuggle with her dad on the sofa.

Nice costume, Grumpy Cat.

Wylla watched the kids come and go for quite some time, and when she started getting tired, joined me on the couch and climbed up on my shoulders to nap.  She took many trips to the door while riding on my shoulder. Sometimes she was in a half-awake state, sometimes she was sound asleep.  Some kids noticed her, some were too distracted by the contents of the candy bowl, and didn't see her at all.

Our little friends Opal the Human and Ellis, her brother, stopped by.  When Wylla said a sheepish hello, and Ellis stated "she's scared of me".   I reminded him that he WAS dressed like a skeleton, and confessed I was a little afraid of him too.

At 9:00, I turned off the porch light and closed the shades.  Wylla climbed out of her sweater, we called it a night, and I headed upstairs with my kitty and a couple of Kit Kats to share.

  1. This was my first Halloween handing out candy in our neighborhood. My brother across town said he was out of candy by 7:30. We shut down operations at 10:00 and we still had most of the treats left. I'm thinking our neighborhood isn't very kid friendly... Oh well, extra Goldfish for me.

  2. AUUUGHHH!!! Whew... Ellis scared me...!

Do the neighbors go all out for Christmas decorations as well? I have a house near me that loves decorating for any holiday.

    1. She does a display for every holiday. Halloween is probably the biggest, and Christmas is a close second.

  6. We too were down Trick or Treaters by 2/3 here in CT. I think after back-to-back hurricanes, kids forgot how to beg for candy. We made an 8yr old day's by dumping the 1/2 full bowl in his bag at 8:30. Just as the 6' spider web with spider, Doritos bag and Legos came down. Grumpy Bean can join Grumpy Sprite & Reilly.

  7. There is a house on the corner of S. 9th and Sprague that goes all out for each holiday too. I call it the "blow up" house because they primarily use the big blow up decorations.

  8. We had a lower than usual turnout (down about 20 percent) in the DC area, too. LG stayed in the basement for the duration. He's a shy type and is not big on kids, or strangers, or even friends and family. That said, once you're on his "intimates" list, he's a real sweetheart. :-)

  10. Boy, that raven really looks real. The only thing that makes me thing it's not is that it is so much smaller than Wylla. Great Halloween photos, all of them. Thanks again for sharing.

  12. Wylla looks so festive in her little orange sweater! Coincidentally, Scarlett was also Grumpy Cat this year. (Melly was Ridiculous Cat, naturally.)

  14. I can just see Wylla taking all the sights in. I'm like Bean when it comes to Halloween. My sister said she had 135 little goblins come to her house!

  15. Hello. I just spotted Charlene's picture on 'Photogenic Felines' tumblr site. She does seem to have enough talent to branch out. I'm sure Wylla could grab some extra attention if she wanted. They grow up so fast.

  16. I love how Wylla participates in everything in her sweet way. And Charlene's "Grumpy" impression is just as beautiful as could be!
