Hang in There, Beanie!

This weekend, the weather was absolutely glorious.   To have such a bright and sunny day in early February, is a rare treat for us here in Tacoma, Wa.

We decided to take Charlene out so she could enjoy the day with us.  She loves going out on the back deck, especially when it's warm and sunny.

Charlene stepped out on the deck, had a few big sniffs of the fresh air, jumped up on the top rail and went to roost at her favorite point, in front of the holly tree.

The birds kept her captivated while Craig poked around the yard, looking at his plants.  I was on the ground beneath her, several feet away, fiddling with my camera and adjusting the settings for this bright day.

After the birds vacated the tree, in the sun and in state of bliss, Charlene began rubbing her face along the railing.

I'm not entirely sure what happened next, I only saw this from the corner of my eye, but I think in her blissed-out state, Charlene attempted to roll over on her back-side, on top of the rail.   Well, this rail is not as wide as Charlene and all of a sudden, she went tumbling over the edge.

I looked up when I heard her scrambling and saw her clinging for dear life from the side of the deck.  After a few panicky moments passed, she managed to climb back up to safety, and regained her composure.

It might of been scary for her in that moment, but even if she would of fallen, she would of been just fine.  The deck isn't that far off the ground and beneath her was a very soft patch of grass.

Immediately after the incident,  she acted like it had never happened.   Or maybe she was acting like she meant to do it.   Either way, she was very nonchalant,  and began giving herself a bath.

But it did happen.  And here is the evidence to prove it.

  1. I laughed out loud. (Sorry, Charlene)

The bath thing was of course to cover up the embarrassment.

  2. Love the way all cats have mastered the 'I totally meant to do that' attitude after a missed jump, slip, etc. Complete nonchalance and a lot of licking...

  3. Poor Charlene! Of course, I'm sure her "composure grooming" showed everyone how utterly silly it would be to say she was scared...

  4. Ha! My cat will do this on the back of the couch every once in a while (complete with follow-up nonchalance), and it always cracks me up.

  5. Yup. "I meant to do that" is an attitude most cats master from kittenhood. Of course, I have one that has no dignity whatsoever.

  6. Poor little Charlene! Of course she meant to do that - she was keeping YOU on your toes! :)

  7. My cat has done this, but in the apartment while on the bed. I even warn her, but she never listens and whoomp! Falls off the bed.

/glad she's okay though! She was just daydreaming about kittens, is all!

  8. Yep - our mean mom snickered too. Glad Charlene is OK, but man it is tough to do that in front of the humans. sigh..... At least she didn't catch THAT on camera!

  9. oh my gosh! I'd have freaked out! But then again, I usually do... I'm glad she's ok! Silly girl needs to be mindful of where she's at!
My Leo falls off of things all the time because he rolls and lays too close to the edge, but thankfully nothing higher than a bed or footstool.

  10. oh, how indignifying! thank goodness the bean was able to bathe herself into composure *g*

  11. Oh my goodness, glad that didn't end up any worse!!

  12. Oh Bean I know you meant to do it - in fact it was probably Mom's fault - you needed to shape your nails and she had not done that recently for you. That's what my kitties say when they slide down my television armoire. But then why do they run when I break out the clippers? oh you cats are mysterious. Glad all is well in Beanland.

  13. Of course she meant to do that! In fact, that's what the marks she left behind say in Feline.

I love that "I meant to do that and nothing to see here, anyway" expression that they get.

  14. hee hee...Spike does this too. He'll get really excited (or really relaxed) and try to do a happiness flop (aka: Stop, Flop and Roll) and roll right off the arm of the couch, edge of the bed, etc. Only resulting in bruised cat ego. heh heh heh...

  15. When my Grisha was just a small ball of grey fluff he jumped onto the roof through an attic window (in Germany they are in the ceiling). I was reading in the living room when I suddenly heard a series of desperate scratches and looked out the window to see him falling to the ground. I ran outside (from the second floor) and scooped up the stunned but generally ok little kitten. He didn't do that again.

  16. Of course, Bean was just practicing her balance beam technique. That's what happens when you practice.

  21. Beanie, you be careful!! I think you need some kittens to keep you busy!

  22. Ha! Poor Charlene. I love that look cats have after they suffer an indignity, where they pretend it never happened. Silly kitties.

  25. Oh my! Reminds me of my oldster falling off the second floor porch rail when he was a young one. He also clawed the hell out of the house on the way down which helped break his fall -- the patch of daylilies he fell into helped, also. Nothing was even sprained on him except his lack of fear!!

Lest anyone criticize me for having him on the porch - the railing was over a foot wide, he had spent dozens of hours on that same railing in the months before the incident and I always supervised him.

I have no idea why he fell since he wasn't sleeping or rolling and I wasn't looking that way when he went over... Maybe he went after a bird?

Ah well, the mysteries of cats!

  26. Poor Charlene, like I always say to my cat, 'No matter how cute you are, you can't sweet-talk gravity.'

  27. Wow. What a story. Poor beautiful Bean--I'm just so glad she's OK. I'm sure she gave you a real scare.

  28. Oh, DarlingBean, I'm so very sorry about this. And how simply *awful* your mom saw fit to publicize your traumatic event four our amusement, er, um ... for us to uh, well, to publicize it.

You just keep bathing and denying everything, honey. I'm on your side.
