Our New Little Brood

The Dearborns

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to formally introduce you to our new brood, The Dearborns.

As you can see, these are some itty-bitties. When they moved in on Tuesday, everyone weighed between 10 and 12 ounces. They are even tinier than our darling Easterbrooks, who weighed a little over a pound when we met them.

They're still figuring out how to eat, but are getting better with each meal. They don't take in enough on their own, so we'll continue to do some hand-feeding by syringe until they master it.

Socially, they're doing awesome. Enter their space, and you encounter a small, purring swarm.

It's been such a pleasure spending time with these wee ones already. I look forward to watching them grow, and getting to know them a little bit better.

I'll be back later today to share with you the first of their first names.

So, please stay tuned!

  1. All of them together are really almost too much to handle.

  2. Ah, "the Dearborns." Just perfect! A small, purring swarm. :)

  3. So. Darling. I just want to stick my face in the basket and receive the purring love! :D

  4. What a sweet picture to come back to after a disheartening meeting with my boss. Thanks for making me smile on a tough morning at work!!

  5. My lord, so so so so cute. SO CUTE. Argh, I'm dead!

  6. Am I the only one that thinks that Laurie should adopt "Drewey Junior"?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Who knew that FIVE kittens could fit in that basket!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I wish I could adopt all of them.

Agree on the Drewey Jr, it's like Drewey was reborn.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Please call Wallflower Wallflower - it suits her and goes well with the family name.

    ReplyDelete
  10. OMC - how cute!!! Mom thought they were pretty tiny.....

    ReplyDelete
  11. oh I want a small, purring swarm!!! Great description. Very cute.

I think Wallflower one should be called Fleur. ;) Or just Flower.

  12. aw, so precious! I wonder if they have no fear of humans since the nice man who found them in the wall took them safety? First experience = good experience?

If he did find the mama cat & brought her in, would she come to stay & nurse them? It makes me sad to think that she might have just stepped away to get something to eat herself & come home to find all her babies gone :(

  13. you absolutely kill me with jealousy in your ability to get all the kittens in the same container, all sitting down, all looking at you and no one sitting on top of anyone else .. how do you do it!! please tell me you have some magic kitten faerie!!

    They are precious..

  14. They are so tiny! And so, so adorable! What a perfect way to start off a day, with FIVE tiny purring kittens in the basket!

    ReplyDelete
  15. How lovely the basket is when it is full of some of the bittiest kittens!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Fleur is a perfect name! I'm melting with adoration for the calico girls.....sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  17. So adorable !!! And, what a story of where they were found. You are an absolute angel for taking in these sweet souls. I'm so glad your blog is big enough to generate so many adoptions.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Small purring swarm..... as if their little faces weren't so adorable, the mere description does it for me! I'll be musing all day on the Purring Swarm. . .

    ReplyDelete
  19. You've found them the perfect surname. This post made my cry a little bit. So sweet.

  20. I second the motion that the little Drewey look-alike become a permanent member of the IBKC household. It just seems so... appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  21. TORTIE!!! I love Torties so much, especially those with the black nose blotches/stripes.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Drewey Jr. could be called June since Junebug was one of Drewey's nicknames. Hehe, can't wait to see what their names are! I know how hard Laurie works to pick just the right name for each little one who comes to Chez Charlene's.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They are so CUTE!! I think I injured myself squeeing over them!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Awwwww ... they are completely adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  25. What a image that created, a purring swarm. As I always say, if I only lived in your neck of the woods... But by now you would have cut me off from adopting any more IBK... Thanks for all you do and I am one that says keep the grey baby only if it is meant to be and nip any rumors in the bud (no 'flower' pun intended) so as not to make her the last adopted baby.

  26. Such a lovely little family of kittens. They look very cozy in the basket. "Purring Swarm" made me chuckle, it sounds like a very cute military operation.

    ReplyDelete
  27. My gosh, that is one squee-worthy picture! Laurie, you really do know how to take 'em! Also, the fact that they all fit so neatly in the kitten basket just shows how teeny-tiny they all are. This just such an adorable itty-bitty bunch!

    *puts on party-pooper glasses*
Now, gang, y'all stop bugging Laurie about adopting an itty-bitty! She'll adopt one when and if she's darn well ready! Of course, I would love for her to adopt one too, but she is very wise and knows the best homes for her itty-bitties and when and if the time is right for her to have a new kitty. Let's quit bugging her about it, and she may surprise us one day when we least expect it. And she probably doesn't like us telling her what to do -- I know I HATE that, and it makes me more stubborn to do what somebody wants me to do - course I come from a long line of stubborn Texans! :)

    Anyway, I'm done now!
    *party-pooper glasses off*

... although, um, she did kinda leave herself wide open in linking Ms. Tiny Grey Tuxie with Drewey! ;)

  28. PS: I wish I was there to snorgle these precious babies!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I always find myself playing the "how many fathers" game -- at least two, I think, since the boy isn't orange...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Amazingly cute. I couldn't pick one even if I lived near-by. I am sure they love being on the other side of the drywall!! Purring swarm-I want a purring swarm! Could we have video of them swarming and purring at a human? Or Charlene? The mind boggles.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sqee, indeed! We anxiously await the itty bitty names for the Dearborns.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Everyonel: Laurie is not going to keep a cat just because it looks like a previous cat. That doesn't make sense. That doesn't even sound healthy.

But it's a moot point, anyway! She has asked at least two times (and I think it's actually been three times) that people stop bringing up adopting another cat. They don't have the need/desire/interest/etc to get another cat. Obviously, their cat needs are fulfilled by Charlene, and the massive amount of time/energy/work/play/etc fostering kittens.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Would love to see pics of the syringe feeding... the little blanket burrito that they use to keep the wee kitties quiet and still is one of the most precious sights ever. . .

    ReplyDelete
  34. I third the folks saying leave Laurie alone about adopting another cat. She'll know if and when the right one comes along. Until then, let it be what it is.

I also wonder about the Dearborns' mama, though I suspect she is gone. (Laurie, if my reasoning is off, correct me.) The four kittens disappeared in the morning; I think it highly unlikely that she leaves the kits all day at that age, and had she come back to find four kits gone, she'd've taken the fifth somewhere else if she was able to. The fact that the fifth was still there in the afternoon suggests that something might have happened to the mama.

As for names: I think there's a Faith in this litter somewhere. I don't know about the others, though.

  35. Aww a basket of cute! The little pink nose on that gray one is just killing me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I now know why people end up hoarding cats. I want them all, so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  37. They are so sweet. What happened to the mom?

    ReplyDelete
  38. They are absolutely beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  39. A bee hive of purring baby beauties !! So good to see them although. Laurie, would a good name for the little boy be Titus.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wish I could climb inside that basket with them!

And for some reason "Nathaniel" Dearborn has a nice ring to it and seems to suit the little boy. But you do always find the cutest names.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm supposed to be working now, but I can't stop thinking of itty bitty names. How about Doris? What about Daisy? Dolores? Deena? Emmeline?

    ReplyDelete
  42. what a lovely bunch of peekaboos! they make my heart sing!

and bless the lovely gentleman who brought in 4, found the 5th, and brought it in to be reunited! (i hope mama cat is ok soemwhere...)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh my goodness all together they are just the sweetest thing ever!!! sooo itty bitty - I love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. When I look at that one on the left, I seriously can't catch my breath for a minute. I want to carry him around in my pocket!!

  46. I already love them all but miss "tiny tuxie" is TEH CUTEST LITTLE FURBALL LEMUR BEAR KITTEN IN THE WORLD!

Also, it's past 1 p.m. and I see no personal introductions. I've already been to the site like five times today looking for an update.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Makes me want to start fostering! We have two cats and while I think one would be just fine with it I think the other would have a hard time. maybe someday when we have a bigger house and can split them up!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Didn't we already have a Dearborns a few years ago? It's OK you recycle names of course, but this name just seems familiar.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The pointed boy on the left resembles my long hair Siamese...
    (Pic at http://tinyurl.com/3favg4v)
Only the kitten's points are a bit lighter.
My boy has had a crush on Charlene for awhile now and would be honored if you'd consider naming a kitten after him.
His name is Mr. Hufflepuff (and he says you can drop the "Mr." if you find that too formal).

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon. No one knows the whole story. If he brought mama in, she wouldn't be reunited. They're weaned now.

Deb - I don't know, she wasn't brought in with the babes. So probably she's still out there.

No, jason. We haven't had any Dearborns before. I've never recycled any names.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sorry Laurie, I must have heard it somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  52. What a bunch of cuties!!

    ReplyDelete
  53. JasonInIllinois:
you are probably thinking of the davenport litter (all too cute)
or the town near Detroit Michigan

    ReplyDelete
  54. That is one of the best/funniest kitten pictures I've seen yet. It sounds like maybe they are less than 6 weeks old?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Now THAT is a basketful of extreme cuteness! Gah, they are so tiny! Can't wait to get to know them all better!
