A Very Sad Day

our little old lady cat asleep on the deck

Well friends, I've got some sad news to share with you. This morning, we said goodbye to our sweet little Drewey.

She had been really low for the past couple of weeks. After many visits to the vet; xrays, ultrasounds and blood work revealed many not-so-good things going on inside of her.

Considering her age (18+) we decided that treatment for all that ailed her wasn't the best route to take, so we put her on a comfort plan instead. Drugs, herbs, sub Q fluids, and a steady diet of anything she wanted to eat worked at first, but his morning it was painfully clear that her time had come.

We took her to the vet, and at 9:45, she slipped away.

We're horribly sad and heart-broken of course, but are so thankful for the many good years we had with her. She was an amazing cat, and it was a privilege to know her.

I'm sorry to have to deliver this news to you. I know whenever we have to talk about the subject of death here, it stirs up lots of painful memories of pets loved and lost for everyone. I'm sorry for bringing sadness into your day.

I do have a remedy, though. I'm pretty sure there's nothing on earth a basket of kittens can't fix... let's say we all give it a try.

  5. I'm so sorry to here about Drewey. You did what was best and gave her the best life that anycat could ask for. I'll be thinking of the IBKC resident crank. I'm really taken back by the news and wish there was something I could to do help. Hugs, purrs, and headbonks.

  6. It's always hard putting down a beloved pet, but it helps to see it as your final act of love and compassion--the last thing you can do to keep them from feeling pain. She had a good life, little Drewey.

  16. Laurie, I am so sorry. But she let you know she wasn't enjoying things any more and it was time. I am sure she will still be there -- I see my 17+ year old cat who died two years ago occasionally. Mostly in my dreams, where she pops in occasionally to purr up a storm. I hope that Charlene will be comforting this evening. She will miss Drewey as well.

  29. Oh, Laurie and Craig (and Charlene), I am so, so sorry to hear this news. The way you described Dewey on this blog so vividly and fondly, I somehow felt as if I knew her in some small way. She was surely loved in her forever home, and from afar by her blog reader-admirers.

Rest well, sweet grumpy Rooster cat. May there be lots of sunbeams and decks and everything you loved on this side of the veil there in the afterlife for you.

  30. Thank you Laurie, for sharing your family with us.

I grew up with a big old surly Maine Coon that lived happily to the age of 16. Despite cataracts in both eyes, he was hunting birds until the week he died. Memories of Maximilian are inevitable at a time like this, but he deserves to be remembered now and again.

  73. What a lucky kitty to have been loved for so long! I grew up in family with long-lived cats: ages 19, 17, 13, 17.5. Each one was a blessing, and every time I will choose losing them over never having known them. The cat I have now is 9 and I cherish every moment with her, even when she's knocking things off the nightstand at 3am. You've done right by Ms. Drewey in easing her pain, and I hope your years of memories will bring you peace.

And yes, a basket of kittens makes everything better!

  88. Oh that's so sad; I am sorry. We lost our dear old boy a couple of years ago at the age of almost 17 and it was a heartbreaking decision, but the right decision. I always think it's the last favour we can give our animal friends; we hope they'll just die in their sleep with no pain, but when the pain gets too bad, there's an easier (for them) way out. And you're right; a basket full of kittens is a great healer. We found our own basketful about 6 weeks later; we have another cat so chose just one, and now he's a rumbunctuous, daredevil, full of beans two year old (almost) tom, who has healed our hearts with his mischief. The best compliment we can pay our beloved cats is to get another; each one curls up in it's own special place in our hearts.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Oh, Laurie, my heart is with you. I am so sorry you had to say goodbye, it is never easy. I try to think about how animals are much more in touch with nature and are not as afraid to pass as humans are. It doesn't get any easier for us, humans, though, as our four-legged friends leave a big hole in our hearts. I cannot help but shed some tears for Drewey and hope she is happy to be free. You are lucky to have had such a great long life with her and to have been with her so she passed away surrounded by her family. I hope you get through the most difficult time with lots of love from us on IBKC. We have lots of love, hope you feel it. And, everybody, go hug your kitties extra much today. Rest in peace, Drewey.

  93. Laurie, I am so sorry. And, yes, this is sad news and there is no way to deny or minimize your loss. Once you have grieved, however, I hope you spend time remembering what a great cat Drewey was and how well-loved she was by those who knew her and the rest of her extended, Internet family. She put a smile on a lot of faces.

I always thought of her as Nanny Hawkins (from Brideshead Revisited); retired from her duties, living quietly upstairs in her dotage, getting updates about what was going on from those around her.

    Rest in peace, Drewey.

At 8:00 pm MY time (central) I'm going to light a candle for a while and send love. 110. Dear Laurie,

I have watched over time with aw and wonder, the fascinating travails of your beautiful little Drewey.

So many wonderful memories...a sweet meeting with a little kitten on "her" deck...Charlene simply unable to leave her alone because she loves her so much...pees left in a bowl..."barely tolerating" playful kittens...

Who could not fall madly in love with a cat nicknamed "Rooster"? I mean, really!

I simply cannot thank you enough for the way you shared Drewey's awesome life with us!

I also wish to thank you for the kind and thoughtful way with which you also shared her passing with us.

It is so much like you to put the needs of your many friends over the needs of your self, even on this difficult day.

    Thank you so much!

You have never spoken of "spiritual" yearnings before, but...May the Lord Bless you, your husband and the awesome work you both do to shepard the smallest, and weakest among us to a better place!

Long live the "Itty Bitty Kitty Committee!"

And yes, there is nothing sweeter and more heart-warming than a basket full of kitten loveliness!

  111. I'm so sorry to read that you've had to part with Drewey. You always write of her with such affection and appreciation for little things that made her Drewey. 112. It is the most heart-wrenching part of loving an animal that they will one day leave us behind. Its been five years since I lost my cranky old lady kitty who would have been a kindred (cranky) soul with Drewey. They live on in our hearts and memories, and Drewey will never be forgotten by any of us.

  114. I'm very sorry. I haven't lost one of my own yet, but it's only a matter of time. I have lost many of my friend cats at the local shelter to the ravages of disease and time, and I can confirm that a room full of kittens are probably the best therapy I can find for the loss of a cat. Few things can convey the joy of having companion animals in our lives, or the simple continuity of life like being the center of attention for a litter of kittens.

  116. Goodbye, Drewey. We'll all miss you. (But what, exactly, were you doing with that broom?) TGFK, who help us bear the inevitable. May each of them experience such love at the time of their passing.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I am so sorry, although I hope that Drewey is rolling in the great bed of catnip in the sky.

    ReplyDelete
  118. So sorry to hear about Miss Drewey, she lived a good long life in a loving home, that is all anyone can hope for. And yes, the basket of kittens does help ease the sadness. The circle of life goes on....

    ReplyDelete
  119. Oh no!! I am so sad for you... thank you for telling us, and for your recent "20 things" Drewey post. You have all my sympathy! Bless her for being the very special creature that turned you into a cat person, and bless you for loving her so hard all these years.

    ReplyDelete
  120. The only bad part about living with cats...their lives just aren't long enough. Blessings for her peaceful passing....

    ReplyDelete
  121. Oh Laurie I feel so, so bad for you! I know this is just heartbreaking. But at least now she is at the bridge, a young ladycat again, healthy and able to do everything that had gotten tough for her. And healthy and just hopefully having a good time. I am sure our boy Floyd was there to meet her, along with all the other kitties who went before, so she wouldn't feel alone when she arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  122. So sad for your loss. Hope the IBKs bring you some comfort.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Laurie,
I always looked forward to your Drewey posts - could always discern the bemusement and love you had for her. I loved that you loved her for her own unique personality. God bless you for all of the love you give to needy kitties and for sharing your joys and sorrows with all of us, your devoted fans. Warmly, Amy and Dave

  125. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how much Drewey meant to you and your family. I know that she will be waiting for you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

  126. I'm so sorry to hear about Drewey. She was a gorgeous and amazing cranky little old lady.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm so sorry, my heart goes out to you on this sad day. I hope you can find comfort in the good memories. Drewey was a blessed kitty for having such a great family and I'll miss reading about her.

  128. I'm so sorry for the loss of Drewey. I have a special spot in my heart for cranky old lady cats (my Emma is 15 this summer).

  129. I am so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks at the news. Thank you for sharing her with us, she has been such a pleasure.

  130. Rest well, Miss Drewey. You are still loved and adored by many, especially your human parents and feline sister.

My deepest sympathies and many hugs for Laurie, Craig, and Charlene. Thank you for sharing your lovely lady with us for as long as you did.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Poor humans and Charlene - Drewey is at peace but your hearts are low. You did the right thing, though, for an elderly and ill kitty (but the right things aren't always easy).

Snorgle those little fuzzballs in the basket extra long and hard.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Laurie and Family, So very sorry for the loss of Drewey. Grieving for pets is so painful, but she was your Drewey and will leave a big space. Much love

    Cheers!

  134. Oh, I'm so sorry. :-( I always felt like Drewey was a cat I would have really liked.

It helps to know what a good, loving home and family she had. I hope that brings you some comfort too.

  135. Laurie and all - we are so sorry for the loss of Drewey! We all came to love her as much as if she were our very own kitty. She will remain in all our hearts. Our prayers are with you this Easter weekend where we celebrate the promise of new life.

    ReplyDelete
  139. So sorry. She's in a better place. Thank you for sharing her life with us.

    ReplyDelete
  140. this is awful news! my family had to put down our 18 year old cat just a few days ago as well. it is so sad but also we can see they shouldn't be living a life that isn't full of joy and then we must make the decision to let them go. can we have one more drewey centric post? maybe you have pictures of her throughout her life.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I am so sorry for your heartbreaking loss. My thoughts are with you.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Lady Bast bless Drewey. Virtual hugs and skritches for those she left behind. I can say that Drewey was a role model for my Snickers' (she'll be 15 in August) cranky old ladyhood.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Oh Drewey! I am so sorry to hear it was time for her to go, but at that same time it sounds like she let you know it was time. I know the Drewster is already up there waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. She probably even saw Jerry Lee and Bernadette, but she may not have done more than just acknowledge them.

Sweet dreams Miss Drewey. And warm, comforting thoughts to the IBKC family.

    ReplyDelete
  144. I am so sorry for your loss. She couldn't have asked for a better family than you, Craig, Charlene and all the itty bitties.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I am sorry to hear this, I know the feeling too well. I lost my cat Hobbes too, she was 21 years old and was my baby. I still miss her every day but I know she is still with me as Drewey will be with you always.

I just saw this and I am so very sorry for your loss. Many condolences and hugs to you. She had so many wonderful years and you have so many wonderful memories of her. Definitely pick up your current kittens and hug them close as well as Miss Bean.

  147. So sorry you lost Drewey. She had a long life but it's still hard to say good-bye.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Out here in California, Sierra (dog) and her human Meghan are sending you warm thoughts and puppy kisses during this tough time. Losing a pet is never easy, but know that you have a little community here sending you mental hugs!

    R.I.P Sweet little Drewey

  149. My deepest condolences on the loss of Drewey, the Grande Dame of the IKBC... She'll be sorely missed by her many fans.

    ReplyDelete
  150. So sad, but she was fortunate to have a long and wonderful life with a family like yours.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I'm so sorry for your loss. And I know that a wonderful basket of kittens can't completely heal the pain you feel, but there is comfort in knowing that life continues, and new babies will find good homes. RIP, Drewster. Hugs to your family--human and feline.

  152. Save a warm spot on the deck for me in kitty heaven, love!

  153. I am so very sorry for your loss. Drewey was always a delight to read about and see photos of. No matter how long these lovely creatures are by our sides it is never long enough. RIP sweet Drewey, you were well loved and will be much missed.......

  155. I am very sorry for your loss. Its been almost 8 years since my grey tortie old lady cat died at the age of twenty, and I still miss her. But she taught me the lesson that sometimes its the time to say goodbye.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I am so very sorry about Drewey. Although her appearances here were rare, I always had a soft spot for her. Thank you for sharing Drewey's life with all of us here at the IBKC.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Aww, Drewey. I'm sorry she had to leave you.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I'm so sorry you lost Drewey. I had to have my 17 year old kitty put to sleep back in October, and it still hurts. At least you can be comforted by the fact that she went peacefully.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I'm sorry for your loss, and my thoughts go out to you and your family. I loved reading about Drewey on the blog (she reminds me a bit of my own slightly cranky Pandora). *hugs to all*

    ReplyDelete
  160. Oh, I'm so so sorry to hear about your little miss Drewey. I really loved her from afar - I have such a soft spot for our wiser, elder kitties. Having said goodbye to so many kitties during my life, I know there's not much I can say, but do know that what you do matters and matters to all of us. Thank you so much. Gentle hugs all around (and smoochies to the little ones!). xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  161. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I hope everyone is doing ok - it can't be easy for Charlene Butterbean to lose her companion (even if they weren't all that close).

Thanks for sharing her life with us all. My three cats send purrs.

    ReplyDelete
  162. It does make me think of the passing of my own Dafni almost two years ago... but the fact is, both your Drewey and my own kitty lived much better lives with us than they would have without us. And that's a fact to be celebrated. Drewey lived a good life, and thank you for sharing her with us. (hugs)

    ReplyDelete
  163. I don't know that I can say anything different than your many fans here, but I'm so sorry. I know the pain of losing a (furry) friend, and it eases over time but never quite leaves us. You made Drewey very very happy during her life and you let her go when it was time. You should be proud...

    ReplyDelete
  164. This is soo sad! My condolences to both of you and to Ms. Bean! Drewey seemed to be a fantastic cat, and looked like she had a wonderful life with you. I still remember watching my cat slip away due to illness and it's not an easy time. I have all of you in my thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Oh, I'm so sorry. Drewey had a beautiful life and you spared her so much by recognizing when it was time to go--I hope that knowing that helps.

    Many hugs.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I am so sorry for your loss. Our 21 year old cat Bebe just passed last week and I know exactly how you feel. You know it's coming but you still hope.

Drewey was old and tired and it was time for her to go home.

  167. Ceiling Cat greeted the old girl with open "arms", I'll bet. And do you wonder if Bernadette and Jerry Lee looked at each other and said, OMG! It's the Drewster!
Well done in this life Drewey Dear. We are better for having known you.

    ReplyDelete
  168. My deepest condolences. Drewey sounds like she had a fascinating life, and you took wonderful care of her. Give extra snuggles to baby-sister Charlene tonight.

  171. I secretly loved the Drewey content best of all... I have a Drewey-aged old lady kitty who I love very much, and a huge soft spot for elderly cats in general.

I'm very glad she was able to spend her last days being pampered by you - I think your house must be one of the best places for any kitty to be.

Thanks for the kitten-basket of comfort.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Drewey was lucky though, she lived a long and happy (if slightly cranky) life with people who loved her very much. Thank you for sharing her photos and stories with us. I was always a big fan of the Drewster and looked forward to her posts. She will be dearly missed.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I am so sorry to hear that Drewey is gone. This is the second blog I follow in as many weeks, that has had one of their stars pass on to the Rainbow Bridge. Baskets full of kittens helps, but nothing will be exactly what Drewey was. Bless you and your pride.

    ReplyDelete
  174. I'm a long time reader of your blog, and sweet Drewey was a favorite. She will be sorely missed. Bless you. My cats will keep you in their purrs.

  176. I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts in prayers. Drewy had a wonderful life and was blessed to be in your home. My guess is she is running in a beautiful field chasing mice and enjoying being pain free.

Please give some rubs and scritches to Charlene for me, and tell her I am sorry for the loss of her sister as well.
