Our Little Cover Girl

Our Cover Girl!

When I stopped by the HS today, I saw the latest issue of Paw Talk, the Humane Society's quarterly publication.

And WHO was gracing the cover,, no other than our dear little birthday girl! What a perfect way to end the day!

The cover story is all about the fabulous things that the Human Society has been doing to improve things for the cats. And you, because of your generosity during our fundraiser, played a major role in the improvements made down there!

Here's what the article had to say...

It's the Chinese Year of the Tiger, and for the Humane Society, it's the Year of the Cat. That means we are focusing more than ever on the increasing adoptions, expanding low-cost spay/neuter options, and enhancing the shelter environment for our feline friends. All with the goal of decreasing the population and finding loving homes for every adoptable cat.

This past fall, our long-awaited cat quarantine rooms were completed. A new system for separating cats into smaller isolation rooms is already resulting in healthier, calmer cats as well as increased adoptions.

Cats brought in by their owners now go to the "Butterbean Quarantine" named for the cat who oversees the foster blog TheIttyBittyKittyCommittee.com and who helped raise funds to complete the room. After a brief health isolation, these cats are spayed or neutered and taken to an off-site venue such as PetSmart or Petco, or placed in one of the new "cat condos" in the shelter lobby. Kittens have their own area, and strays go to the large cat room, where they have more space.

Instead of being overwhelmed by a large number of cats housed together, adopters can now choose from a dozen beautiful cats in attractive lobby enclosures. They are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for FeLV, microchipped, and ready to go home today. The cats are healthier, happier, and the process is simpler and more efficient. And this means cats are leaving in higher numbers, and that is truly great news.

  3. How hilarious and cute.

Laurie: You should be really proud. You're always quick to give credit to the community here on the blog, but I hope you take a minute and just get that YOU ARE THE GENESIS OF IT ALL! None of it would have happened without you. It's perfectly okay to take a little credit.

  4. Elaine ~ You nailed it! Laurie's not so good at taking credit for any of the successes she's spearheaded, but we know differently.

I'm so proud of what everyone has done to help the cats at our shelter. The difference it's made is incredible.

    Thank you ALL!!

  15. Happy Birthday WEEK, Miss Butterbean. Now, you have celeb status to deal with. You are so humble, I am confident it won't go to your fuzzy head! "Butterbean Quarantine,"...what a proud moment. I, too, had tears when I read the article.

My boys, Spencer and Gussy, are both rescues. To hear them tell their story would sound like this..."Poppa was an alley cat and Momma was a stray. I was abandoned as a child. You don't know the trouble I seen...and then my new Momma came along and saved me! She loves us, and keeps us warm and fed, and most importantly, she keeps us safe."
