Big Paws. Big Guy. Big Name.

DSC_8595

I'm so excited to announce that this fluffy guy with the jumbo paws has a name. FINALLY, I can officially introduce you to him.

PLEASE say hello to Mr. LLoyd Chudley Alexander!

Dina was the high-bidder that selected the name for this chap, and I couldn't be more thrilled with her choice.  I know we've got a lot of book nerds and librarians in this crowd, so I think you'll enjoy her selection. Here's the story behind it:

The man he is named for, Lloyd Chudley Alexander, is a wonderful writer of children's books, winning both the Newberry and the US National Book Awards; I must note that they are a great read, even for adults. Mr. Alexander was a cat lover himself as well. His first successful children's fantasy was Time Cat, inspired by his own cat who would often visit him while he was writing, but whom Mr. Alexander would never see come in or go out. Both Time Cat, and Mr. Alexander's Taran the Wanderer series were favorites of both mine and my children (both now grown), and I am pleased to honor him and his writing by naming this kitten.

You may call the kitten Lloyd, or use his nickname, "Mitts", which is what we've been calling him during the auction. I'm sure it's obvious why.

Thank you, Dina, for your generous bid and excellent name choice! Well done!

We just kicked off the naming rights auction for Madame Alexander, so if you want to get in on the bidding, click HERE.

And don't forget, donations are TRIPLED today thanks to an anonymous donor -- what a great time to give!! Click HERE to make your tax-deductible donation.

What a great name! He has big paws to grow into, so a name like that will be helpful.

  5. Newbery. Named after John Newbery who was the first publisher of children's books.

  6. Named after one of my very favorite children's authors! I wrote him a fan letter when I was a child, and he responded with a kind and generous note on cat stationary.

  8. This is a new author to me, too. I will check him out. Love the name. Instead of "Mitts" as a nickname, I might be tempted to use "Chud".

  9. Lloyd! How I miss him. Mme. Alexander needs to be named Janine -- which was her name in real life!

(I was one of his editors, as well as his goddaughter.)

  11. Excellent name! I loved the Prydain books as a child. I don't think I ever ran across Time Cat, though. Something to look for at the library.
