Alumni Update: Maddie Bouvier (And Team Tortie)

maddie and the lamp

Maddie Bouvier’s adoption tale will always be a favorite of mine. Normally, we only adopt out locally, but for Maddie we did bend the rules. A lot of plotting and planning went into getting Maddie to her family, and because of this, she will always be a very special kitten to us.

Alicia, Maddie’s mom, sent a big batch of photos and some great kitty anecdotes, too. I think you’re going to like what she's sharing with us today!

Here we go!

Hi Laurie!

Maddie is a very happy 8 year old tortie girl in perfect health. As the leader of every household insurrection*, she makes sure there is plenty of chaos at home. Twice a day she functions as the family's official alarm clock, assuring that meal times are strictly observed on pain of rattled doorknobs, broken valuables, or snagged clothing. She runs to greet us at the door and slaps her paws to invite play, two dog-like qualities she acquired from Cassie. She is very happy to scoot the detached handle of a paper bag across the floor with her sister Gnocchi when a clean cotton swab isn't available. Maddie also goes nuts for peppermint tea, the package of which she carries away in her mouth and licks maniacally.

Her best trick--and I hope the IBKC readers will say if they've ever known another cat to do this--is hiding wide-eyed with fully dilated pupils just behind a door frame as you approach. At the last moment before you step into the next room, she springs up five and a half feet in the air and slides down the door jamb like it's a fire pole. It can be genuinely startling and is therefore very hard to catch on video. I'll keep trying though.

*Almost every insurrection. Sophie starts a fight every day at 5pm Eastern but Maddie always wins.

love, Alicia

You can read her adoption tale HERE and HERE. It was such an awesome story, we had to put it in two posts!!

Thanks for sharing so much with us today, Alicia! Please give Maddie a smooch from all of us, and some love to the other members of Team Tortie, too!

  3. My kitty used to do the wall climb thing! She would hop up and grab the door jamb, but before she started sliding down the wall, she'd attempt to climb higher first. It was crazy! She's 14 now, so I think her wall climbing days are over, but it was endlessly hilarious.

  5. Good to see you again, Maddy. Love your Team Torbie and the synchronized sleeping. Glad you still have kitten crazies with the door jumping! You have become a lovely lady.

  6. Look at those beautiful torties! I guess the peppermint tea thing makes some sense, as catnip and catmint are in the same family with peppermint. Or does she just like the zingy taste?

  8. *Three* torties? How does she handle all that attitude? ;D Mattie sounds like quite the character.

  9. Wow, Maddie's story was what introduced me to IBKC all those years ago. I recall needing some kitty interaction from work and came across the post. This was long before lolcats got me through the day.
The IBKC has been part of my life all these years, Laurie, you and the girls are an amazing part of the interwebs and for me life wouldn't be the same without you. I've laughed and cried with you over the years, i remember Geraldine and Jerry Lee fondly and squeeled alongside others when Craig said you can keep Wylla. Happy blogging and may the world of interweb kittehs go on forever

  10. SO happy that Maddy is doing well. I fell hard for her when she was at IBKC and loved her adoption story. Your account of her hiding then sliding down the door jam had me giggling. What a charmer, and her sisters seem to be as well. Sending purrs and love to all of you!

  11. I also have a cat who jumps up a door jamb! It it's the most hysterical thing. I figured I would have to spackle the heck out of that door jamb (it was, eh, not looking the best) should I move out of my apartment, and should I want my security deposit back... But then I had the apartment repainted and I did the spackling the night before, and the sand papering while the guy was here. I doubt other (sane) people are wielding tools from their tool box (thou I am pretty proud of it), sand papering as the painter is hard at work... But then they don't have my crazy boy cat.

Btw, is this the woman who was obsessed with torties (it looks it, by the 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th pic)? :) I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN 8 YEARS!! Is this how long as I've been following this blog??

  12. Looks like Alicia collects torties! LOL
Ok, My tortie, Laney, does the same thing: hiding wide-eyed with fully dilated pupils just behind a door frame as I approach. However, instead of springing in the air, she patty-pat-pats you with her paws. Or she will shoot herself out sliding on her side to patty-pat-pat you. :) Precious!

  13. By the way, I have two torties. Not chosen because they were torties...but God gave them to me. One came from Chick Fil-A, the other was TNRd.
