Rough Weekend for the Big Cats

I'm going to remember this, Wylla

Every now and again Charlene's right eye will get a little runny. We'll go to the vet, get some meds, and it all clears up in a day or two.  This weekend, her right eye started getting a little winky and there was some discharge in the corner.  Having dealt with this before, it didn't seem like an emergency situation, so we waited for the holiday weekend to be over, and took her to her regular vet.

During the exam her doctor discovered a small ulcer in the outside corner of her eye. Based on the size and location of the ulcer, most likely it was caused by a bop to the eye from her sister.  We left with an antibiotic ointment and also some pain meds to use, if needed.

Bean is doing just fine, though it's a fight to get the ointment in her eye. She looks good and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, thank goodness.

And then there's Wylla.

Saturday morning we had to take a run to the emergency vet because Wylla had some issues with her anal glands. I'm going to spare you the gory details, trust me, you don't want to hear them, but everything is fine now. Her pants got a little hair cut, she got some antibiotics, and is recovering just fine. The odds of this reoccurring are very slim, so most likely this will be the last of it.

Both girls are going in for re-checks on Monday and we're anticipating good reports.

  1. Poor Charlene! A couple of my cats have ulcers, but they are related to issues from when they were little, and will never actually go away. They have a permanent cloudy spot. But it doesn't slow them down one bit! Injuries like that are pretty common. I am happy she will recover without issue. And poor Wylla too! Thanks for not going into detail on that problem Laurie! I am glad she is on the mend too! They can go through spells sometimes, where they need extra attention, but thankfully the spells are few and far between.

  2. Poor cats! Glad they're handling it well. And don't worry, Wylla, cataloons grow back!

  3. Awwww poor Wylla. Our hairy baby girl has had her pantaloons trimmed on more than one occasion because of that every issue (I'm assuming) Wylla had.

  4. "Her pants got a little hair cut" -- !! :)

(Yep, sometimes it just has to be done, huh?)

Glad both big cats seem to be doing well now!

  5. Phew! Very worrying even after the fact when all will soon be well. So happy both are on the mend and that you can get the eye gel in place. The first time I had to do that with my first cat, she was so shocked she had to run straightaway to her litter box to pee.

  6. I'm so glad the girls are doing better- the vet once offered to show Alex how to do our huge male tux's anal glands and Alex just said "I don't think so". I had to put a contact lens into our silver tabby's eyes for 2 weeks to help her cornea heal- she ate most of them. What a struggle. How we all love our kitties!

  8. Why is it that cats like to wait for a long holiday weekend? You have my sympathies on Wylla's haircut and reason why. We had a Norwegian Forest Cat with the same issue, so I know how silly that haircut can be. Hoping Beanie's eye heals up and her sister stops bopping her.

  9. Laurie -- You're definitely on top of this. Just a thought. My mom's cat had an ulcer on her eye and they started giving her Lysine from the compounding pharma so it tastes like salmon -- she loves it. But they thought it was from an eye herpes virus that is VERY common in shelter cats but can be quite serious if it comes back. The lysine keeps it at bay completely -- and she LOVES the taste. Might just ask if is worth doing as a preventative.

  11. When it rains, it pours! I'm glad to hear both ladies are doing fine now. Better tell Wylla to aim her boops away from Bean's eyes when they're playing. ;) Hopefully Wylla isn't too traumatized by her cataloons being trimmed and...well, everything that happened this weekend (anal glands truly are nasty, smelly, invasive business). I am so glad anal glands aren't the issue for cats that they are for dogs.

  12. Our Benny has had several eye ulcers (he also has glaucoma in that eye). We've never known the cause; perhaps it's herpes related or perhaps he's just prone to them. Thankfully, they clear up quickly once you start medication.

  13. Glad everyone is okay! Dosing eye drops is not fun, but glad it's not serious!

  14. I once had my cat's anal glands drained. Not pretty.

  15. I expect Laurie and most of the other regular readers are old hands at cat wrangling, and getting eye meds in -- but for those who don't know the trick (passed to me by a very experienced cat person) is to always approach from over the head with the medication -- cat's don't seem to be able to see it coming and respond as well from this angle. Get well, all!

  16. It feels funny to hear you refer to Wee Wylla as "one of the big cats". Guess that's a sign of good cat-parenting (and that I've been following for a while).

  17. I was putting some ointment in one of my cat's eye, and had to papoose her to get her to hold still. Just grab a big towel, get her quickly snugly wrapped up in it, squirt, let her loose. She'll never know what hit her. :)

  18. I have an 11 year old cat that has had the weepy-eye-thing/winking on-and-off sinceI got her at 3 months. I mix part of a capsule of the lysine (that I take) in her wet food twice a day and it never has progressed to anything.

  19. Awww poor girls. Give them some extra snuggles from me

  20. Wow, I thought anal gland stuff was more a concern for boy cats. I hope both big girls bounce back.

  21. Aw, hope the girls are both as good as new soon. Have been away and am still catching up on things, but took a quick look at posts for this month and will comment on one of them: Oooh, Wylla has a boyfriend! Can't really blame her, as he is one cute l'il dude! ;-)

  22. Oh no! I've had some anal glad issues with my fluffy cat (and Wylla look-a-like). It's just so hard to see what's going on back there with the floof monsters!
