Hottest Day of the Year. So Far.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year. So far.

Craig worked from home, and had to abandon his upstairs office in the early afternoon to seek a cooler spot on the main floor.

Of course, the cats stayed up there to absorb all the heat and make large and dramatic flops on the rug. Bean went belly-up and Wylla stretched out on her side. Both were in different positions, but  were equally deflated and flat.

With such a warm days so early in the year, I fear we have a long, hot summer ahead!  Pace yourself, girls.

How do your kitties handle the heat?

  1. Need to unzip the kitty suits. Lots of cool water and fans running for the girls. All that floof must be heavy in the heat.

  2. It was really hot here in San Francisco yesterday, too. The cats loved it -- in fact they were fighting over the sunniest (and hottest) spots. I had always thought that they were heat seeking missiles :) -- I guess its time to get out the fans and put the portable heater away until next winter. Stay Cool !! -- this weekend it will be 90+ here -- hope it won't be that hot by you.

  3. Poor little dollies. All that floof must make it more difficult to cool off.

We have a tiled entryway that our kitties like to sprawl out on when the temperature rises. I put ice cubes in their water dishes and sometimes even wipe their paws with a cold washcloth.

  4. Here in humid CT - my Maine Coons spend a great deal of time on the concrete basement floor or in front of a fan.

  5. People from New Orleans and Houston have no problem with buying a heat pump- keeps the house at 74 for us using less energy than the 5 fans we had kept running. We had to do it- no one was sleeping and we couldn't eat anything but ice cubes. Maybe people native to the NW have no problem with the 8 -12 weeks of dire heat. (108 did not work for me).

  6. I keep the AC on during the hot weather here in North Carolina. My cats live the good life, in air-conditioned comfort all day, while I slave away at my desk at work to keep them with ample supplies of kibble. :-) Even with the cool house, they seek out the tile floors in my kitchen and bathrooms, and on the granite in front of the fireplace. My babies don't have to "suffer" like poor Wylla and Charlene... :-) I bet when they flop, they do it in dramatic fashion, right Laurie?

  7. One of LG's fave hot-weather pastimes is to flop on his back under either the ceiling fan in my office or the one in the master bedroom, with his front legs in bunny-hop position and his back legs splayed out in a quite undignified (but cool) manner. He'll also stretch out on the hardwood floors.

  8. Here in SW Missouri it gets in the triple digits with over 80% humidity pretty much nonstop for around 4 months of the year, so my kits wouldn't last too long if we didn't keep the A/C on! My 2 black cats especially love to sit on top of the vent with the cold air blowing directly on their faces. I think they get themselves overheated from lying in patches of sunlight and then have to cool down. They also get ice cubes in their water dishes, which is more fun for playing than the fanciest toy in PetSmart!

  9. Awww, Charlene Butterbean! You are so fluffy and pretty! I used to put ice cubes in Cassie's water bowl on very hot days and always kept a fan running for her, even when I wasn't home.

  10. It gets quite warm here in Sacramento, and I gauge it by the length of the stretched-out cats... ie "It's a 20 inch day..." I get dirty looks until the air conditioning finally is turned on. Yep, looks like it's going to be a long, hot one this year.

  11. In North Texas We open the shade in front of the cat tree and try to balance the heat gain by keeping that room cooler than the rest of the house and running the ceiling fan plus a smaller fan pointed at the bed. It might still get into the high 70's F in that room.

  12. Over here in the Great Lakes region we are still dreaming of warm days....there were snowflakes in the air just a few days ago. My kitties are soaking up every sunbeam they can find and loving every minute of it!

  13. Summers here in South Australia usually come with a heat wave of over 40 degrees Celsius. My boy kitty will beg to go outside, roll around on the hot cement, then come inside and flop in front of the air conditioner because it's too hot!

  14. DC is gorgeous and breezy today! Where did you get that rug? It's lovely.

  15. Hottest? Here in Chicagoland it's still chilly enough at night that the furnace kicks in. I haven't had the AC on yet. My cat Pepi still plops down over the heating vent and loves it.

  16. Both go out in the front doorway with me watching then they hunker down in the house in a cool place until they can stand any form of heat..We had 81 in our tiny town Monday the 27th it was hot and humid, we turned on our fans and it was reasonable, we are getting new windows, insulation and a new patio door, it should help and a a/c unit in the kitchen our hottest west facing and largest room in our tiny home, we love the heat just not so early..Your Queen looks great and so does Princess Wylla, enjoy your weekend coming up!
