A Wee Gift

This week, I started putting Wylla's heating pad deep into the corner of the couch and under the lamp with the hope that she would try doing a little of her upright napping there.  If she could prop her wee body against the sofa back or arm and have a little support,  I thought maybe she could get a better nap, and fall deeper into sleep.

Well, it worked.  That smart little cookie of ours figured it out,  and I found her napping like this the other morning.

So, I leaned a  pillow against her to offer a little support on the other side, and she napped like this for quite some time.

I guess she has really grasped the concept that being upright really does help make her feel better, because later that day, I discovered Wylla standing like this.

Then a little bit later,  she was sound asleep and standing up.

And seeing her like this, well,  it got me a little choked up.

Dealing with her Megaesophagus has been a huge learning curve for all of us.  There's not a ton of information out there on cats and MegaE, so we've had to figure out a lot on our own through trial and error.  Once we think we've got a good handle on the situation, and it seems like her condition is in a good place,  she'll have a stretch of  bad days where she struggles to keep things down. It's mysterious, confusing and discouraging. It shatters my heart when I know she's experiencing discomfort.

But when I witness moments like this, I feel very hopeful that there can be more good days. She's committed to feeling better. She's trying new things, and figuring out what works for her.

Thank you for this gift of hope, wee Wylla.

  4. Such a smart little thing! I adore her so, and I am so glad to see her learning how to manage her MegaE on her own [with help from her humans] so well. May she have all the good days possible. <3

  5. She is such a clever little girl and I'm so glad your family found her. You have been so patient in helping her deal with her condition and that's probably the greatest gift Wylla could get from a human. Also, so I don't get too maudlin, pillow forts for kitties!

  6. Oh goodness, I wept with tears of sadness for her, yet happiness knowing she is in such a good place!! I know Drewey would approve >^..^<

  7. I cried happy tears for her that she has such a wonderful loving home, and tears that she doesn't have good days every days. But, like I've learned from my kitty that lost her eyesight, she really doesn't know she's different from everyone else, and they never complain or are bitter. They offer their very special gifts, I know Drewey is smiling down upon her.

  10. Oh!! I definitely got all choked up too, seeing the pictures and reading the accompanying details.

It IS hard on us humans too, to see our sweet creatures not feeling well, and wondering in the morning if this will be a bad day or good day.

I think that following wee Wylla's story gives the gift of hope to a lot of us.

Merry Christmas to the whole IBKC family!!

  17. What a sweetheart. Wylla was so meant to be with you all.

The commenter who suggested a Temple Grandin "cattle gate" was onto something! :D <3

  18. Sigh. So sweet and adorable and brave and smart. It does break one's heart when they are hurting or scared.

On a lighter note, is it me, or does she look rather like she's bellying up to a bar in the next to last pic? Hey, mister bartender. A round of (virtual) treats for the whole itty bitty kit and caboodle - on me! Merry Christmas to our host and her family, and to all IBKC denizens, be they two-footed or four-footed.

  19. Oh, it is so hard when our pets have problems that cause them discomfort. You just want to make it all better for them. She's a darling little cat who gives so much pleasure and is so obviously loved and adored. I hope you continue to find ways to help little Wylla. Merry Christmas and thank you for the pleasure you give from your blog posts.

  21. Animals definitely can learn what helps them feel better, as Wylla has shown so perfectly. Such a smart girl, to show her family how much she's learned about taking care of herself! Could anything be sweeter?

  22. Merry Christmas to Wee Wylla, Bean, Laurie, Craig, and the rest of the gang. Wylla couldn't have asked for a better mom. She's doing great and she's got spirit which counts for a lot. Love, Mary

  23. What if you used half of a length of sonotube (you could decorate it) with one end propped up? Wylla could actually lie down and have her body upright at the same time. Hubby made a "tunnel" with a piece of sono and our cats LOVE it for sleeping.
    Merry Christmas!

  25. Oh, dear girl! How funny it must have been to find her napping while draped over the sofa arm. I'm so glad her ME is under control and everyone has found just the right ways to keep it that way. Merry Catmas to everyone at IBKC Central.

  29. I just adopted my megaesophagus foster kitten, too! We actually think the megaE is secondary to something else, and are going to do exploratory surgery soon. She came to us as a bottle baby and now 9 months old and 3.5lbs! Merry Christmas to you and Wylla from me and Davida aka Little!

  33. If love can cure her, she will live to be a very old lady, indeed. After all, she doesn't know she is different. She is the best.

  34. I worked at a vet clinic for a few years back, and we had a 10-year-old beagle with megaE. Even after all those years, he had episodes where he had to come in to see us. But these were barely minor setbacks for him: he was a happy guy, with a loving family and a great life and much more happiness to come. Please don't feel discouraged, we all have our up days and down days, megaE or not.

If there's something more to be done for Wylla, you'll find it because you're a very loving family. Sometimes, all we can do is be there for our family during the down days and though it doesn't feel like enough, it means the world to those we support.

And Wee Wylla already seems to have figured out much more than my beagle friend. His owners held him after meals, but he never figured out to be upright on his own. He also never figured out to stop eating his mother's jewelry, or christmas ornaments, or any bits of carpet or clothing he could get down... We saw him a lot at the clinic, only occasionally for the megaE =)
