It's A Stout World

DSC_0825

We're keeping the kittens contained until everyone is 100% healthy. The large wire cage that's been their home was starting to become too small for the the two Stout girls, so I had to get a little creative, and figure out a way to expand their world.

I found a few jumbo boxes, each 2.5 feet wide, four feet long and 14 inches deep.  I joined them together, and cut out a few doorways.

This cardboard kitten habitrail butts up against the opening of their cage, and it's all set up on a couple of large folding banquet tables.

During the day they're able to roam freely from room to room.

There's plenty of room to run, and it's REALLY fun to chase toys around inside the boxes.    They're not really interested in climbing out of this world, but they have started peeking over the walls.

It's working out great for now and they seem pretty happy in there.   Hopefully they'll be healthy by the time they outgrow this world!

  1. Audrey! <3 You look as happy as a clam in your kitty-trail. How clever the humans are at Itty Bitty Kitty Committee. :) Tell your adorable sister to get well soon!

  2. Wow, Laurie, you are the best kitten mom ever! What a creative, imaginative way to keep some curious kittens entertained -- at least until they're big enough to attempt a break out. Hope they get to 100% soon!

  4. Are these babies available for adoption? There are 2 that especially love! I'm in North Miami. You can reach me at maingros@gmail.com. Thanks!!! I have been dying to get a kitty so bad. I lost my sister in December and would love to get one and name it after her... even if its a boy!!

    1. I'm sorry, but we're in Tacoma, WA and keep our adoptions local. I'm sure there are plenty of kittens where you live too!

    2. Laurie, You have a real talent for getting the word out on kittens looking for homes. I've longed more than once to fly to the West Coast for one of your cuties. Heck, you just made convalescence look good.

I know you're busy, but have you every thought of writing some tips for other animal shelters to try on their websites?

  12. This brings back some of the audio track fom my childhood: the sound of tiny kitten claws scrabbling on cardboard as kittens attempt to chin themselves and explore beyond the box. What fun!

  18. Wow! Being a kitten sure is fun, isn't it Audrey?! What a great little play house.

I'm happy to see a little pudgy belly there too.

  19. Someday soon you will be greeted at the door when you go into the kitten room. I kept my two kitties in a guinea pig cage. They got to where they could eventually climb out. But what is really funny - they were so used to sleeping in it, they jumped back in at bedtime. I would lock them in and cover the cage with a towel at night (so if they woke up early, they wouldn't cry too much.)

  22. Your ingenuity is boundless! :) I'm going to pass along to you what my dad used to say to my mom, in admiration: "You make it such fun to be a baby." I think this applies to you, too :).

Any possibility we could see more of the "habitrail" in one picture, to see how it is all laid out? (If not that's fine, just curious...and greedy...sorry...am sorely conflicted between wanting to see and not wanting to pester...am losing this argument with myself, sigh).

  23. Oh my freaking God, Laurie!! These pictures knock me *out.* Glimpses of an ear tip, toes reaching over the top of the habitrail, and that pudgy little baby belly!!!

By the way, Keith was reading over my shoulder and now he wants to come visit. :)))

  27. I just love her pudgy little tummy! What's the deal with her stubby tail? Did they all have tails like hers? I like it!

    1. It's not really stubby, it's just the angle it was shot that makes it look that way. It's a normal kitty-sized tail.

  28. I do so love this series on Miss Audrey Stout.
Her little paws trying to pull herself up to see out...as her wee little legs dangle in the doorway.

She is loving her new kitty habitrail, and so am I!
Her rounded belly made me very happy....I sure hope Wylla takes a step along the healing trail!

  30. I love these pictures... since I adopted my sweet brown tabby as a grown-up with kittens of her own, I'm imagining these are the baby pictures of my Zellie that I never got to see.

  31. I am sure I am not the first one to say this but dang you are one creative chick!! I love it. Hopefully they will be out and about before they figure out and escape route. thanks for the updates, thoughts and prayers y'all's way!

  32. What a creative idea. You are so lucky that they aren't climbing out. The photos are way, way too cute. Purrs and hugs from the kitties at www.thecatonmyhead.com, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
