We Fostered a Frog

I stopped working with fresh flowers a few years back, but on occasion I'll come out of retirement.  I'm working on a party for a client this week and for this event, I had to order several flats of succulent plants.

Craig came downstairs to pay me a visit and discovered this teeny tiny little guy hiding in the plants.

We made him a little terrarium to keep him safe while we figured out what to do next.  We weren't positive if he was a Northwest native that came in with the succulents, or if he had traveled from further distances and came in with a box of flowers a from warmer climate.   If he wasn't native, we didn't want to sentence him to death, but letting him free outside last night.  It's been awfully cold around her lately.

Craig did a little research and we think he's a Pacific Northwest Tree Frog.  After doing a little reading, and learning they like to eat slugs, I set him free in our garden.

He's such a cute little guy.  It was fun having him as an overnight guest.    And now I can add "Frog Fosterer" to my resume.

And speaking of fostering ...

As soon as I get all these flowers out the door, we'll get us some more kittens.   It just seemed silly to bring them in during this event.   The first few days the kittens are here, they require the most care.  I didn't want a situation where I couldn't be 100% available to them, so I decided to wait a couple more days.

Bean's been having fun hanging out with me in the flower studio.  She loves checking things out and watching me work.   Don't worry, she's not nibbling on anything.  With the exception of Bear Grass, she's never been curious about what flowers taste like, she just finds it interesting watch.   To be extra safe, anything poisonous is kept out of her reach.

Have a good Monday, everyone.   If I have time to post while I'm finishing up this party, I will. But don't be surprised if I skip a day.

  6. Fun house guest! And those pictures of Charlene with the flowers are adorable. Hey, I was wondering... Do you know of a good list of "bad plants" for cats? I've googled, but gotten conflicting info. One source made it sound like pretty much everything was bad. Any ideas?

  7. It just amazes me how Charlene looks gorgeous against any backdrop! She's a really beautiful cat.

  8. I think Bean likes having you all to herself for a few days! And, she's ready if there are any more frogs hiding among the flowers!

  9. I love that you didn't just throw him outside but researched to find out if he had a chance of actually surviving! Animal people warm my heart.

  10. What everyone else here said about the flowers and Charlene!

  11. @Tara
This link from HealthyPet.com pares it down to a manageable list and even tells you which parts of the plant are toxic (potato leaves and stem, but no the potato itself, etc)

  14. oh, it's nice to know i don't have the only house that tree frogs can get into! a few weeks ago we had one behind my computer -- it was quite a challenge to rescue him as the cats were very intent! but seemed to be fine when i put him in the back garden.

your flowers and miss bean are both looking lovely.

  15. Miss Bean is yet more lovely than the purple roses and other flowers in bloom. The itty bitty frog fingers and toes are just beyond cute, and how sweet of you to foster him and attend to his well-being. Perhaps one day, he will come back as a handsome prince for Charlene.

  17. Bean as the center piece surrounded by your gorgeous arrangements -- she certainly is a beauty. I hope your little froggy enjoyed his sleep over !!

  18. Glad the frog is safe in his new home! And Charlene looks lovely amongst the flowers. We have certified chompers here, so no flowers for us....

  19. What GORGEOUS flowers you do, Laurie! I love to do (VERY amateur - ie for my parents' Thanksgiving table!) flower arranging and so admire your beautiful arrangements. The colors set off Bean's fur so nicely.

And froggy is so cute! I'm normally not a huge fan of non-furry animals, but how could anyone hate on that teeny weeny little froggy woggy? (sorry, got carried away there!)

  20. Everything you touch looks like a million bucks Laurie. Where were you when I needed centrepieces for my wedding? The Bean would've made an excellent and stunning addition too. ;)

Love that you took care of the little froggy...like Meg said, animal people warm my heart.

  21. Charlene looks so pleased that you provided her with such a lovely floral background to pose beautifully in front of!

  22. Cute froggie!
And a million squees! at Charlene's little white feet. My favorite pics of her always have her sweet little feet in them.

  23. The Bean looks like she is in her native environment, something elegant. I can hear her commenting "And the succulents' accent colors must match the roses." Maybe with an English accent. The flowers are amazing. And FREE FROGS! Maybe you should get back into floral work!

  24. If I put one of my cats among your beautiful floral arrangements, they would be gone. I have a cat who loves to eat rose petals.

  25. Laurie, you never cease to amaze me! FABULOUS!

  26. Charlene looks appreciative that you made flower arrangements to complement her beautiful self.

Froggy does indeed look like the tree frogs that populate the shrubs and flower beds of my condo...we have a retaining pond <15 yards away and springtime is incredible when they come out of hibernation!

Charlene deserves a bit of "just her" time with you and Craig.

  27. Just as well that the itty bitties weren't around for the frog's appearance or he might not have had the chance to tell all his frog buddies about the lovely Charlene Butterbean!

I'm sure that this (might) earn her (partial) forgiveness for that other photograph.

  28. No flowers/plants around here.. Anything plant-like that comes into the house is deemed "Kitty Salad Bar". I get the occasional poinsettia at Christmas, but that's put way up out of harm's way. The girls would certainly have loved the frog appetizer. :)

  29. Kudos to you and Craig for researching before dumping the frog outside. It's not just for the sake of Mr. Froggie too. It's also important not to let nonnative species loose because it can really mess up the environment. Even if it's only one frog, if it's from say Brazil, you don't know it is carrying a frog flu that will make the native frogs sick.

  30. @tara, the ASPCA's site is pretty reliable for what plants (and also household chemicals, cleaners, insects, and random things) are poisonous for cats.
    http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/ask-the-expert/ask-the-expert-poison-control/
The ASPCA runs a 24 hour poison control hotline (not free but could be worth it in an emergency) so they have a lot of data on what happens when animals eat things they shouldn't.

  31. Looks like Charlene is having her Eliza Doolittle moment. Dreaming of being a 'well-spoken lady' who can get a job in a flower shop.

  32. I always knew that Charlene was just as pretty as a bouquet of flowers...now we have photographic proof that it is indeed true!

Perhaps there is a new spin-off in the future...IBFC

PS The flower arrangements are just magnificent!

  33. Laurie, is there *anything* you can't do??? Your creativity knows no bounds!! I can just picture that little froggy telling it's friends, "Wow!! I spent the night in the Kitten Wrangler's house, and you should see the *amazing* flowers she's arranging!! Her husband is a dream, and their cat, who's world famous, is totally gorgeous!!!"

  34. Bean looks really beautiful amongst those flowers. :)

  35. A frog! Is there anything you can't nurture?

  36. Pretty stuff! I want you to make flower arrangements for my next party : )

  37. I am glad I found your blog this morning. Really enjoyed the photos of your beautiful cats. I'm a fellow cat fancier and animal advocate, and just adopted a feral kitten that "found" us.
