EVERYTHING, with an Audience

I can't do anything without my kitten entourage. Seriously. Unless I tuck them away in their bedroom, they are with me, they are near me, they are on me, they are watching me. It's sweet for awhile, but they do make it difficult to accomplish any sort of task.

The other day, I was doing dishes and the whole brood was crying at my feet and climbing my backside. I tried to redirect their focus by pulling a chair into the kitchen and piling them on the seat.

This kept them busy for awhile, but eventually they figured out they could jump from the arm of the chair to the counter.

Fortunately, I finished the dishes and drained the water before Curtis landed in the sink.

  1. Oh my...:) Who is that in the window contemplating evil acts on the poor drapes?

    How I love them.

  4. Nothing quite like a kitten to make you feel like the most interesting person in the world!

  5. "Watcha doin' huh? Can I help? How about me? I wanna help too? Why aren't you playing with me? What's goin' on up there? Let's check it out? "

What's a kitten wrangler going to do but laugh?

  6. Awww, just look at those curious little faces! Especially Curtis... and caught mid-jump, too! I think that's Edith behind the curtain. Too cute!

  7. Misdirection works only for a little while... otherwise you have to do your work when they're sleeping. I'm trying to sew bindings on some flannel quilts, only to have my 3 try to crawl in and make themselves comfy. No number of kitty treats, paper grocery bags, or strips of leftover material can deter them from their appointed task of depositing cat fuzz all over the quilts.

  8. I love Teddy's "Who, me? Nay, I am but a poor innocent bystander" look.

  9. Love the mid leap picture! They're helper kittens, honest.

  10. The funny thing is, sometimes they don't grow out of it. My 9 year old cat will sit next to me on the couch after I get home from work, and will meow at me if I do something other than pay attention to her!

  11. Love that action shot of Curtis at the end. He's a doll!

  12. @ Susan:

My cat is 9 and if I don't acknowledge him hourly, there is hell to pay. He will come into my office when I am working and announce his presence with a very loud "mew". If that doesn't work, he jumps up on the desk in front of the monitor. It is hilarious and frustrating at the same time. And if I sleep in, don't get me started about "paw in the face" as an alternative alarm clock.

  13. Awwww ... they hafta learn ... and the best way is by observing, and trying, and taking part in EVERY activity! LOL! But it must be hard work (even if they are adorable).

  14. What a great bunch of pictures and kitties! I try to sleep in, but eventually, one of my cats decides to sit on my head to wake me up... Cats are to be obeyed!

  15. @susan

Indeed. My two are nearly 6 and I've had to stop doing any type of needlecraft because they insist on chewing on the thread as I sew and I'm just too worried about someone chomping down on a needle.

  16. Hilarious! I totally understand your frustration. I have one cat who is way too old for the shenanigans he pulls off. He no longer has the kitten excuse.

  17. "Let me help you, it will take twice as long"...
    Great mid-leap shot...and butter wouldn't melt in Teddy's mouth!

  18. Indeed. Jigsaw puzzles, craft and sewing projects left half-finished on tables are a thing of the past in any kitteh-centric household. Laurie, you have the patience of a saint---as well as the delight of one witnessing divinity on a daily basis.

  19. "Some kind of help is the kind of help that helping's all about.
And some kind of help is the kind of help that we can do without."

Learned that from my mom when she taught special ed kids. Seems to apply here, too, doesn't it? :)

  20. O.K. they are a pain for you, Laurie, but they are a delight to us! Thanks for taking and posting the photos for our delight!

  22. So true, so very true. They just know that us humans need help with everything with everything we do. We are utterly incapable of even the menial of tasks without kitty help or supervision :)

I got "help" making the bed last night from my two - two year olds...when the bed sheet ended up balled up in the middle of the bed and Roxie was jumping on Kasey in the middle of the pile..what could I do but join in the fun and just watch them play :)

    Have fun with the entourage!!

  23. I love that the simple act of piling them all on a chair provides enough distraction. I love the curiosity and then the realization of "hey, wait a second... I can actually get OFF this thing?"
