Frail Little Finch Boys

There's a lot I don't tell you. I tend to sugar-coat things and make it look pretty rosy most of the time. One reason is because it's a feel-good place. Many of you have told me you come here because it's a little escape. Because of that, I like to keep it positive. I don't want you to feel worried, sad, or stressed.

The second reason is, I don't want to scare off any potential adopters with stories of ill kittens. Our kittens leave here healthy, but often, actually almost every time, one, if not all the kittens in the litter can have upset bellies, vomiting, diarrhea, colds, fleas, or an occasional worm.... it's just part of being a kitten. Especially a kitten coming from Lord knows where, eating who knows what.

Usually the first week is a rocky one. Then once the kittens adjust to their new home and diet, they begin to thrive. By the time their two week quarantine has passed, they are usually A-OK.

With Ira and Walter, it's been rough from the start. They came to us all roly-poly, but from the day one, there's been lots of vomiting and diarrhea.

They ate well the first day or so, but after that, they lost all interest in food, and for the next week, they had to be syringe fed. I've been giving them fluids as well. It's sustained them somewhat, but when everything just rushes through them, they drop weight. As their weight dropped, so did their energy and zest.

Finally, this weekend, they started eating like little piggies. They would devour anything you put in front of them. I was feeling hopeful. Their energy seemed better, there was less vomiting, but the diarrhea continued.

I brought them into the Vet today, they didn't get a good report, and sadly, our boys will be spending some time in Vet Treatment. Hopefully they will be able to come home soon. Hopefully they will come home. Period.

I'm sorry for any sadness this post may cause. Like I said before, I like to keep this a happy place, but I felt the need to share this with you. I guess mostly because I know that good and powerful things happen we join together. We all witnessed it this summer. So let's all think good thoughts for our frail little FInch boys. Let's hope they're healthy, happy and home soon.

  3. I think you were right to say all of that. And I hope that the little Finches will be all right. They've had the best of care and love from you and your family. That has to have been a good start for them.

  5. I'm sorry to hear. But we know you take great care of those kittens. All we can do now is just wait with you. Thanks for sharing with us, your IBKC admirers.
P.S. You've inspired me, when I'm able, to be a foster home for kittens. Thanks for that.

  7. Thank you, Laurie. *Thank you*. Yes, this is a "happy place". I've been coming here every day since the beginning. My partner & I contributed to the Butterbean Quarantine. We're more than fans.

However, when things like this happen - we can collectively send good thoughts your way and for those of us who pray, include you, Craig & your feline family in our prayers.

Keep doing what you do. We so appreciate it.

  9. Thanks for sharing with us. I will be praying for the little kitties to get well and come home. Having both cats and dogs and other animals all of my life, I know how easily it is for them to get sick. Prayers going to Walter and Ira.

  15. Knowing the reality of the situation is important, and though bad news can be disheartening, it's still good to know. Thank you, Laurie, for trusting us enough to share in the rough times as well as all of the happy. Lots of positive wishes for quick healing and better health for those sweet ickle Finch boys.

  17. Thank you for sharing this, Laurie. I remember the posts about little Jerry Lee and just crying my eyes out. But, it was something that needed to be shared.

Sending out some good thoughts and prayers to the little Finch boys! Heal well sweeties!

  18. Such sweet little babies. I wish I could kiss both of them right now. I'm so glad that you open your home and heart to all of these babies. Although it breaks my own heart to think of the potential worst case scenario, I'm also so touched that YOU have given these boys love, caring and warmth, even if only for a brief time. Thank you (and Charlene!) for mothering so many wee little fuzzy souls! I'm sure it is often very difficult for you - big big hug. xoxo

  19. When we brought my kitten home from the humane society, she developed an upper respiratory infection. It was a rough few weeks but she recovered well and now we are especially glad we adopted her when we did because they probably wouldn't have been able to keep a sick kitty at the shelter. Hope it makes you feel better to know you've given them a much better chance. HUGS

  21. A quick recovery to the Finches! And thanks for sharing all this, Laurie. I think it's important to know the whole story behind those darling faces. It's that much more happy-making when we get to hear how they rally against the challenges that are so common to itty bitties in those first weeks.

  24. Thanks for letting us in on what's happening. I am sending good thoughts to the kittens and to you.

  25. This post does make me a little sad, but it also reminds me (and hopefully everyone here) that these kitties are so, so lucky to have you. The fact that they don't have it easy and that they really do need special attention makes us all appreciate you and this blog more. I hope sharing makes it easier for you to cope with. Thoughts are with you and the Finches! Thanks for everything you do for them and so many other ibks.

  26. Big blessings for you Laurie and for those dear frail boys.
    With thanks.

  27. Thank you so much for giving us a small glimpse of the VERY hard work of being a foster kitty mom. You make it look very easy on your blog with your happy stories and gorgeous photos - but we cat keepers KNOW that a cat's health can turn just like THAT for the worst, especially with vulnerable little foster kitties.

Here's sending love and support to you, your family, and all the kitties - plus warm appreciation for this incredible blog!

  28. This time last year, I had a very sick girl (my then 9-year-old, Millie) in the hospital. She had pancreatitis. It was AWFUL, so I know how you are feeling before.

At the time, many kind people said prayers for my sweet girl--I thought they'd find me silly, being so upset about a cat, but it turns out there are more cat people in the world than we know. Make that animal people, period.

So I will say a prayer for your sweet Finch boys, and hope that they recover to become healthy, happy, active boys who find a wonderful fur-ever home. You do so much for these babies!

  29. I'm another one that comes here almost daily, looking for my kitten fix. It is a positive, fun place to come; but I appreciate the truth too. I'll keep the little finch boys in my good thoughts, and hope for the best.

There are so many healing wishes, prayers and vibes coming their way, not to mention their kitty karma, I can't imagine that they won't be turning a corner in the next few days. The vet staff will take good care of them.

Giant hugs to you and the precious boys.

  40. You really do a great job of keeping this a positive place -- not always a realistic place about what it's like to be a foster kitten mom, but always positive! I love to check in for a smile every day.

  54. Poor Finches! Being a kitten is tough. Being a kitten from a rough place is tougher. I adopted a kitten about a year ago. I got him from a rescue group (2 Paws Up) that takes kittens out of the high kill shelters in the surrounding (and poor) counties. Elvis came from Harnett County, NC. My vet told me that if he actually made it to the shelter in Harnett Co. then he's a strong kitten. It's a very rural farming county apparently overrun with feral cats. He's had a tough start. An awful eye infection that prevented him from coming home for 3 weeks and caused him to lose a bit of his eye sight, ear mites in spades, worms, the whole 9 yards. A year later, he's the picture of health and is getting close to full size. Here's hoping for the same for the Tiny Brothers Finch!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sending warm healing thoughts and prayers. You are such a special person to take these kittens into your heart and home. I still cry for Jerry Lee. I have two kittens we rescued from a feral mother and I bottle fed them. They are like my own children to me. I hope your babies are back home and healthy soon.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Sending you and the kitties all my warm thoughts and love. You do such wonderful work here ~ I know all the kitties you look after are getting the best care and are in the best hands! (((hugs)))

  76. I'm sending positive healing thoughts for the little Finch brothers! They are just so adorable and I really hope that they pull through this and get better soon.
I also thank you for sharing these details, things in life aren't always perfect and adorable and healthy unfortunately. I have a chronically ill kitty that I've had for over 7 years and know that you have to treasure the good cuddly times and they make the hard times easier to get through.
I have been a long time reader of the blog, and don't think that I've ever commented before today. Thank you so much for this blog and all that you do!

  81. Well wishes for the little ones to get better. (And thank you for sharing--I know it's sad, but as others here have noted, we're not just fair-weather kitty fans.)

    *hugs*

    ReplyDelete
  82. You do such an amazing job of caring for these kittens, and giving them the best start in life they could possibly hope for. I know first-hand how difficult it can be to have a young kitten, and how nerve-wracking it is when they get ill, so I completely empathise with what you must be going through right now.

I don't think those kittens could hope to have anyone better sitting at home, waiting for them to return, so I join you in wishing that they return home safe and well.

    ReplyDelete
  83. We are gonna purr real loudly for the Finch kitties. We are sad abowt the noos BUT we know yoo and the vet, between yoo, are giving them the best care kitties could have ~ so right now we feel confident they will be OK.

Thank yoo for being such a good foster mom too ~ Alfie was rescued and fostered before we brought him home ~ so we are grateful and appreciative of all yoo do for the kitties in yoor care.

BIG smoochies ('cos we 're guessing yoo are a bit sad too).

  92. Sweet baby boys, get well soon. They've experienced the warmth and love of a home because of you, Laurie. That in itself will give those babies an extra bit of fight so they can return to your care.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think it says it all, that there are 93 posts on this already.

We do come here for daily sweetness and light, that is true. But we could never appreciate that joy and laughter if we did not have pain and tears to go along with them.

I guess this kind of shows how tight the community is - you ask for us to phone Hubie with donations, we rise to the occasion. You post an update about the little Finches, we all send the best possible thoughts and good wishes your way.

Here's to having the sweet fellows back in the nest very, very soon.

  111. Thanks for sharing. We all know the reality of loving a pet/s (or fostering pets!) can bring real sadness. My baby boy is only 6 months old and is succumbing to FIP, so although reading your blog does help me to stay upbeat, it is helpful for you to address the realities of life. I really hope the boys get better soon and come home to you, and that they leave your home happy and healthy and with the right families.

  115. Laurie,

Thank you for sharing this with us -- it's good for us to know what's going on so we can all send prayers/good thoughts/healing vibes to the sweet babies that you take such good care of. Thank you also for sharing your beautiful foster kittes as well as the Bean and Drewey with us. I check in almost every day, and it is a lovely and positive place. But please do continue to let us know when things are not as pleasant so we can send out positive thoughts and words of support to you and the babies. And with that, I send love, light, and healing beams to the darling little Finch boys and love, light and support to you, your hubby, Charlene and Drewey. Thanks again for all you do for the foster kittens and for sharing them with us!

  126. Poor little sweeties ... affectionate headbonks of encouragement to them. :-( If anyone can get them better, it would be you!

  127. Thank you for caring for the little guys, despite the heartbreak and worry. It is sad to hear, but if nothing else sharing their troubles with us gets them and you a heck of a (and I speak non-denominationally) prayer base.

  132. When we brought our little girl home she was sick too. She recovered really well, but we were lucky.

We'll think good thoughts for these sweet boys. They have been lucky to have you tending to them all this time.

  140. Loving vibes and appreciation to the Finches and their fabulous foster mom - and the same to all the other kitty parents who have been posting in the comments and sharing their own stories! We lost two of our oldster cats around this time last year, which makes the holiday season extra emotional this year. Kitties bring so much into our lives!
