Sure, He Looks Innocent...

Lovell Pickett

... But in the past couple of days I have caught him doing some very naughty things.

I won't go into details because he does have a home, and I don't want to frighten his new parents off... but Lovell Pickett,,, I am keeping my eye on you.

  1. He's probably got what I call "ginger cat syndrome". Sure, he's adorable with his ginger fur and his tiny booties...but ginger cats are, in my experience, completely and utterly mad. But their adorable nature means they can get away with anything :)

  4. Ginger Cat Syndrome - that is the most perfect explantion for my ginger male Azzy - and I bet for Lovell too.

Trouble? There isn't a bit of trouble that can be had that my Azzy can't find. He's ornery, he's a death defying daredevil with no sense of his own mortality, and a toilet paper roll fetish. And if male cats who have been snipped are supposed to settle down the older they get to become mellow little lions, Azzy obviously doesn't know his jewels are no longer attached. Once I did mention to him the fact that he was not in possession of his full equipment, and he answered by biting me on the toe.

His salvation: He's a loving Momma's boy. How can I be angry with him when 99% of what he attempts is so funny I'm laughing to hard to scold him?

  5. I had a cat who until she got too heavy to carry it off, used to get a running start in the kitchen, zip through the dinning room and up the living room drapes to sit on the curtain rod, looking around to make sure the humans displayed the proper admiration for such an acrobatic feat.

Mr. Innocent may not yet be up to such tricks but I'm sure he's planning them.

  6. I *refuse* to believe that anything that sweet looking could be anything but angelic.

Of course, I said that about the one sleeping next to me and the list of his bad habits is as long as my arm. I am duped by the cute.

  7. I think it all has to do with Garfield, the original marmie badass! But Lovell is so cute. I, too, am duped by the cute...

  8. I recognize that sweet "Sleeping the Sleep of the Innocent". There's a Yiddish word for Lovell and others like him: "Paschkudnik!" (It's always spelled with an exclamation point.) Having one around keeps one a) young; b) active; c) entertained; d) frustrated. My Lilliane is our paschkudnik, and we couldn't do without her. (Well - Evangeline maybe could. We don't ask.)

  9. Now I'm beginning to understand. I
have a Marmie, the first ginger cat I've ever had. I thought at first I would loose my mind. I had to "cat proof" my house because there is nothing he can't get into. But he is adorable, loving and so sweet to his sister siblings. He can jump higher than
I've ever seen and the tops of the door jams are one of his favorite
places to be. But I adore him like
    no other.

  12. I have been following this particular kitten from the 1st time I was linked to this website..I have just rescued, Liza... a "ginger" cat to join my family and after reading all these posts...I am comforted to know that I'm not the one who's crazy, it's the cat!! So whoever is lucky enough to get Lovell, God Bless you and enjoy the ride...

  13. So comforting to know. The favorite words in my household are

    "SIDNEY STOP IT"

    "SIDNEY NO"

    "SIDNEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING"

  14. Hmmmmm - yesterday and today 'splains alot. Alice was small but didn't know it and although she is mostly white she has the "ginger" behavior. She thinks she is big and bad yet she can look so innocent and Lovell has that same sweet and innocent look! I am beginning to understand.

  15. He wouldn't be a proper kitty if he didn't do naughty things!

  16. I don't know what's wrong with you people. Tiny, sleepy, pouty Lovell would never do a naughty thing. He told me so.

  17. i love naughty marmie kitties. with those innocent looks and bright eyes, it doesn't matter how many rolls of toilet paper they shred in the hallway, you will still think it is adorable and snap a billion pictures.

  18. I made a holiday card for the family with a picture of my little troublemaker looking innocently at the camera. The caption was, "My name is Get Away From The Tree, what's yours?" It is still mentioned amongst the family because it's so true.

  19. Little Lovell is sleeping the sleep of the plotter.

"What am I going to do when I wake up?"

  20. ginger cat syndrome is REAL. i grew up with two gingers and they are crazy!!!!! which only makes them cuter, of course, per the rules of cuteness.

  21. tracey merrill--i'm so glad to know that my cats aren't the only ones who shred toilet paper!!! one of them could go through a whole roll while you slept, and you'd wake up to find him fast asleep in the little nest he'd made.

  22. Although I adore all of the itty bitty kitties, I confess I have a big soft spot for Lovell. I guess I have a thing for bad boys. ;-)

I'm happy yet jealous to hear Lovell has gotten a home. I wish you and your foster kitties lived closer to Massachusetts, Laurie!

  23. We're watching you to Mr. Pickett! Maybe if he knows he's being followed by many internet fans he'll straighten up :)

  24. Laurie your post totally made me think of Steve C.

  25. elena, congrats on your new family member! Enjoy your ginger Liza! I've had two... one was a purrfect gentleman, aptly named "Purrkins," and one was evil incarnate, behind a face that the world just loved, named George!

  26. Lovell is mostly on his back but with his face turned slightly towards the camera, sound asleep, with a slightly out of focus sibling next to him. His forearm is slightly squashing said sleeping sibling's ears.

His eyes are squeezed very, very tightly shut and his nose and mouth are a bright, almost coral pink. His fur looks luxuriously soft and his peaceful expression suggests that if you touched him, he'd purr and wriggle in ecstasy in his sleep.

He's almost certainly dreaming of the kind of trouble-making that only Beulah Mae and Charlene Butterbean would be able to foil.

Oh, yes, gingers are definitely a kind of their own.

A neighbor's cat used to hang around our house. He was a big, burly guy with a "scruffy and proud of it" air. True, he'd had a certain indignity perpetrated on his privates, but the only way he'd even consider admitting it would be by drawling something about how all female cats within a 250-mile radius cried the day it happened.

He was also a very loving guy who could shake foundations when he purred. Somehow he and I had a special bond that had a few "can't quite explain that" moments. After I headed off to college, he didn't hang around our yard much at all. However, the day I came back for the winter break, guess who was sitting on the porch with an "about TIME" expression on his face. He got seriously ill when he was about 22, maybe older, and didn't leave his own home much. Except one day, he came over when I was there alone. He was so skinny and sick-looking that I held him on my lap, crying, for quite some time. The next day, he was gone.

  27. annf - thanks for making me tear up! your story and your last experience with your burly neighborhood kitty makes me love these creatures so much more. it's true that cats pick you and in this case, your gentle giant wanted to have one more time with you before leaving. how touching...

  28. annf, you said it perfectly. Now, in defense of marmies, my first kitty as an adult (after many family kitties while growing up), was Doober. He was just a big shy boy who loved us and didn't do naughty things. That said, I think he was the exception because my daughter has ALEXANDER (the terrible) and my vet's latest house cat is Orange Julius who got taken off the streets with just barely enough of his ears left and was clearly the guy to watch out for, post-jewels though, he's such a pussy cat. I just thought of this: I should tell them to change his name to Orange Jewel-less.

    ReplyDelete
  29. well mine isn't ginger but at around 5 her name was changed unofficially go Genghis! the basic explanation is because she's bad - bad bad bad, I've scars to prove it. She's now 12, still bad and still nuts, chases her tail in the bottom of the shower...

  30. Oh, these are all lies, vicious lies! Why just yesterday several of us (okay, three of us) commented on the fact that in many of the recent photos darling Lovell was out like a trout.

Now Laurie, you're trying to convince us that he's an itty bitty destruction derby? I'm just not buying it. I think you want to keep him, so you *are* trying to give his new parents second thoughts. Can't say that I blame you, but really, to trash the reputation of this innocent babe? Oh, my.

As for cats + toilet paper - my tuxedo boy, Wilson, just loved a good toilet paper party. I once came upon him swinging on a roll, his arms wrapped around it, his hind feet completely off the floor.

  31. Aye, I have to agree with all the "ginger cat syndrome" calls!

    ReplyDelete
  32. How could that sweet sweet face very possibly be a troublemaker? He's beaut :-) and I'm sure he's just testing his boundaries!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I simply cannot believe that Lovell has been naughty in any way at all. Laurie, you must be mistaken. Really you must. Just look at that tiny, ginger innocence, so pure, so fuzzy :D
