A Former Shelter Kitten Shares Her Story

Baby Butterbean

When I was a wee kitten,  just a few days old, my brother and I were surrendered to the Humane Society for Tacoma/Pierce County.

I was examined by the doctor,  a call was made,  and the Humane Society found us our foster home.

We were tiny and frail, and our foster Moms gave us the very best care possible.  They bottle-fed us and filled our bellies with KMR.  They kept us warm and safe, and tended to our medical needs.

Sadly, my little brother just wasn't strong enough to make it.  They tried so hard, but he was just too frail to save.

Under their care, I grew and thrived, and eventually, I left my foster home and was adopted by Mom and Dad.

I'm guessing that when I passed through the doors of the shelter, no one knew what life had in store for me.   I never would of guessed it myself.

Here I am, seven years later.  I've helped foster oodles kittens and raise squillions for the shelter.  I've brightened a few days too!   I found a little sister!  There's even a room named after me at the shelter!

And I met all of you.

Without the Humane Society there to give me a chance, none of this could of possibly happened.  The shelter means the world to me, and I hope you will support me, by supporting them.

Please consider making a donation today and help homeless cats find their forever homes so their "happily ever afters" can begin.

Thank you.

All my love,
Charlene Butterbean

  1. That brought so many tears to my eyes that I am starting to wonder if I should be in cat therapy!

  3. I love this story. I also love how that adorably awkward kitten turned into the most gorgeous cat I've ever seen. My daughter loves to come to IBKC and look at pictures of Charlene. Thank you Laurie (and Craig and Charlene) for everything you have done to improve the lives of animals and people everywhere! You are amazing!!

  4. Hi, Laurie.

Just curious. I don't think I've ever heard how old Charlene was when you first met her. And were you already friends with the women who fostered her, or did you become friends through the adoption process?

    1. Charlene was about 10 days when I first met her. We had just moved into the neighborhood, and met her foster moms the day we met Charlene.

  7. Who knew what a beauty she'd turn out to be and what a criminally adorable little sidekick she'd eventually have?! Posts like this are very very dangerous ... I just want, more than ever, to save ALL of the animals at the shelter and shield them from any future harm. Oh, my life for a rambling farm house in the country! Keep up the great work, Laurie.

  11. Awwww...... Who would have guessed that a kitten who started out from such a scary beginning would grow up to be a beautiful (and famous!) cat?
